My dog is having seizures. Is it life-threatening? What should I do?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. For any seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes, I get very concerned about irreversible neurologic damage. During a seizure, the brain tends to overheat due to misfiring of neurons. This can lead to neurological abnormalities related to brain damage from the excessive heat produced by the seizure. If a seizure lasts for an hour I would most certainly expect irreversible neurologic damage to ensue. I would seek immediate veterinary care if this were the case so that the most appropriate Diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Yes. I would recommend taking her to an emergency veterinarian immediately. She could be having seizures from hypoglycemia which is treatable, but can be fatal if not treated quickly. She could also have a liver shunt or developmental problem with her brain causing seizures. Trauma or ingestion of toxins can cause seizures as well. If she has had that many seizures in a short period there is potential for permanent brain damage. Head to a vet as soon as you can - I’ll be hoping for the best for Daisy!

Hurley needs to be on Anti seizure medications URGENTLY, seizures that last more than 2 minutes are very dangerous and can cause irreversible damage to the brain. you need to take her to your vet ASAP.

12 seizures within 20 hours is a large number of seizures. Also the length of the seizures at 5 to 9 minutes is extreme. This does certainly point to a serious problem in the brain and likely to a tumor. Make sure to take your dog to the vet on Monday to adjust the dosage/add other medications. If the seizures last longer than 5 minutes , use the diazepam your vet gave you and if the seizure does not stop with the diazepam, you need to take Murray to an out of hours vet or ER right away.

Oh no, poor Lou Lou! You will need to seek emergency veterinary care if her seizure lasts five minutes or longer. This is the point at which brain damage can occur, and she will need treatment right away to prevent that. I hope this helps!

Seizures are very scary! if this is related to the chocolate, Coco is not expected to have any further seizures as long as she doesn't eat any chocolate. If the seizure was related to epilepsy or some other cause, then it could happen again. I recommend to ask your veterinarian about their clinical impression. I hope this helps.

If Lady has been having a continual seizure for four hours, this is a medical emergency and she has to see a vet now. This is extremely serious, and she could suffer permanent brain damage from seizing for so long. She has to see a vet right away, please take her into one now. I cannot stress enough how much of an emergency her situation is right now.
