My Chihuahua had a seizure for an hour. Is there brain damage?

Hi...Happy Holidays Season! What are the damages after apylepsy stroke that lasted about an hour for Chihuahua?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. For any seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes, I get very concerned about irreversible neurologic damage. During a seizure, the brain tends to overheat due to misfiring of neurons. This can lead to neurological abnormalities related to brain damage from the excessive heat produced by the seizure. If a seizure lasts for an hour I would most certainly expect irreversible neurologic damage to ensue. I would seek immediate veterinary care if this were the case so that the most appropriate Diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. My dog is having seizures. Is it life-threatening? What should I do?

First of all the first seizure was very very long, 8 minutes is a long time for a seizure and that could have caused some longer lasting damage (although not permanent) to the brain, and maybe that is why Mango has several more small seizures. it is worrying that the seizures are happening so frequently, ideally he should see a vet ASAP as it could be life threatening if another long seizure occurs.

You can also have transient deficits in the post ictal (after -seizure) period that may resolve. You should bring your pet to a veterinarian for evaluation. Certainly seizures can be the result of a toxicity but, they may also be due to metabolic problems or primary neurologic issues. in addition, if he is having continual problems, there maybe treatment needed. I hope he is ok!

Seizures can occur due to many reasons that go from a toxicity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and even tumors including brain tumors. I highly recommend that you have Casey evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like a seizure. I would recommend video taping an episode and showing your Vet. Causes of seizures depend on age. In dogs 1-5 epilepsy is the most common cause. In puppies: toxins, infectious or congenital problems and older than 6 years of age we worry about organ failures and brain tumors. One to 2 episodes a month may warrant starting medications. I would recommend full blood work with urine, thyroid testing if older than 6 and tick testing. If all that is normal then consider starting medications. i wish Bella the best!

My dog had a 1-hour seizure. Was putting her to sleep right?

I am so sorry that happened. A seizure that lasts more than an hour can cause significant brain damage. If they could not get the seizures under control and they kept getting worse I do believe you did the right thing. We have the ability to relieve pets of their pain and suffering and we have the ability to help them pass without having to get to the worst parts of disease.
