My Chihuahua ate a Kit Kat. Is a small amount of chocolate toxic?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 18 lbs

18 pound, 8 year old apple head Chihuahua, in good health except overweight, Ltd on all shots, ate a small, snack size mint Kit Kat bar. With wafers and mint i figure at most 1 ounce of dark, sweet chocolate or less.

It will probably not cause any problems as it wasn't enough chocolate to be toxic. Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, or tremors and if noted, take him to a vet right away. Good luck and kisses to Hercules!

Hi there! Let me help you out with Snowball.
As long as it is not dark chocolate (which I don't tink kitkats even come in dark chocolate), it is honestly probably OK. That seems like a miniscule amount for such a large dog.
In using a chocolate toxicity calculator on a veterinary forum, even if I type in the entire kitkat bar (assuming it's the typical 3 ounce bar), it says "should be OK".
What would you look for if Snowball were to have chocolate toxicity? Vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, or shaking/tremoring are all signs to look for. If they occur, call a veterinarian right away. However, as I mentioned, I really think it is too little of an amount to do any harm.

Well that wasn't good of Winston to eat that Hershey's kiss! The good news is that one is not likely to cause any problems. It's very small and doesn't contain enough chocolate to cause any toxic symptoms. He should be fine, so I wouldn't do anything for him except monitor him to be safe. It does matter that it is white chocolate - fortunately white chocolate is not toxic! It could cause some mild stomach upset so if Xina vomits or develops diarrhea I’d recommend seeing your vet. Otherwise no treatment is required.

Fortunately that is not enough chocolate to be of a toxic dose in Goofy. It may upset his stomach though and cause vomiting or diarrhea over the next 24 hours though. You can monitor for any changes or symptoms then seek a vet if needed.

No worries about this. Even if it was a rather big cookie with big chunks of chocolate, it would not be enough to cause chocolate toxicity in a dog that size. One of the first signs of chocolate toxicity is vomiting and hyperactivity. If you haven't noticed this yet, then there's little chance he will have any signs of toxicity. If he happens to show these signs, then a trip to the vet will be needed for monitoring and medication. However, there's almost no chance he ate enough to cause any problems, so I wouldn't be too worried right now. I hope that helps and all is well with Zeus.

My Shih Tzu ate a dozen chocolate kisses 2 hours ago. Should I worry?

Nine chocolate kisses equals about 1.45 ounces, so 12 kisses would be 1.93 ounces. Based on the chocolate toxicity calculator, at Josie's weight, you will see minimal to no reaction from eating this amount of chocolate. You may see some GI upset, such as vomiting and diarrhea, and if you do, I recommend withholding food and feeding a bland diet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet.
