My dog got chlorhexidine in eye. What are symptoms & how soon?

Corneal damage is sometimes visibly noticeable by a cloudiness or haziness over the surface of the eye. However, sometimes if the affected area is very small it will not create this appearance. The only way to determine the presence of damage corneal tissue with certainty is with a stain. Staining is placed in the eye and that subjected to a special spectrum of light that checks to see if the stain binds to the damaged portion of the cornea. This is typically a procedure that can be done at any veterinarian.

Watch for redness, swelling, discharge from the eye, or Zoe keeping her eye closed a lot. Also watch for rubbing her eye. If you see any of those signs, get her into a vet immediately. She may be ok, however.

The eye lids appear very red and with the history of the runny eye discharge with a sudden onset, there could be a scratch on the cornea or a foreign object trapped under the eye lid. An allergic reaction is also possible. Corneal scratches and foreign objects in the eye are uncomfortable and can get worse quickly. Ouch, poor Sam! You did the right thing by rinsing his eye immediately. The redness and swelling of his eye could be a result of irritation from the shampoo. In some cases of irritation, the cornea can also become scratched, particularly if Sam is scratching his face or rubbing it on the ground. A vet should examine Sam's eyes and will likely need to perform a fluorescein stain test to determine if any scratches are present. If there are no scratches, Sam may need a prescription for a steroid based eye medication to decrease the inflammation in his eye. However, if a scratch is present, steroids in the eye are not safe and a different anti-inflammatory medication may be needed. Make sure Sam is wearing an e-collar (cone) to prevent him from irritating his eye further. I hope that he's on the mend soon!

Watch for any squinting of the eye. Could be a side effect of anesthesia. Their eyes have ointment put into them for anesthesia because they do not close their eyes when sedated and they can dry out. They could have gotten dry. If you have any saline eye drops or artificial tears you could try that today and then call your vet when they are open again
