My dog has sudden green eye discharge. Should I see a vet now?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 5 months old | 65 lbs

Hello. My dog is presenting with a runny eye. Clear fluid and also green discharge. This just started; it wasn't there this morning or before I left this afternoon...I just got home and saw it. He is eating normal. Drinking normal. No food changes, no detergent changes. He has not been in a situation where soap or anything got in his eye. His sclera is not red at all. At this time, it is only happening to his right eye. He doesnt appear to be more tired than normal. Any thoughts?

The eye lids appear very red and with the history of the runny eye discharge with a sudden onset, there could be a scratch on the cornea or a foreign object trapped under the eye lid. An allergic reaction is also possible. Corneal scratches and foreign objects in the eye are uncomfortable and can get worse quickly. Chester needs to wear an elizabethan collar at all times and he should be examined today by the veterinarian for correct diagnosis and treatment. I hope this helps.

The little lumps/bumps may be small inflammation of the meibomian glands (small glands on the edge of the eyelids) which are rubbing against the surface of the eye causing chronic inflammation. This chronic inflammation typically cause hyperpigmentation, that you see as a black spot.
The bumps could be treated with anti-inflammatory eye drops and the eye must be checked as well. I would recommend a check up at your local vets.

Congratulations on adopting Shadow - he's adorable! I can certainly see some conjunctivitis from the pictures that you've posted. His redness and discharge could be a sign of an eye infection, corneal ulcer, or pannus. Eyes are fairly delicate structures and can change rapidly, so I do recommend taking Shadow to a vet today for evaluation. Until you can get to the vet, be sure to keep an e-collar (cone; http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=20390 ) on him to prevent him from rubbing or scratching his eyes, as this could make matters worse. I hope that all goes well!

If it's just the one eye there may be something going on on the corneal surface that you can't see with the naked eye. A vet would need to stain the eye to see a scratch. Ouch! Poor Archie. If Archie is squinting, rubbing, or having redness in the affected eye, he should be seen by a vet today. These signs can indicate a corneal ulcer or abrasion as a result of the trauma. However, if he does not seem bothered by the eye and the discharge is improving, you can continue monitoring it for changes through the weekend. In the meantime, out an Elizabethan collar or cone on Archie to prevent any further damage. Avoid putting anything in the eye, but you can use warm water to clean the discharge from under his eye.

My senior dog has green eye discharge, redness, and cloudy film.

At least in these pictures, his cornea appears affected. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. My dog's eye has green gunk and cries when touched. What's wrong?

Poor Pippa! I definitely see the discharge in the inner corner of her eye, and a little bit of redness. You should definitely have her examined by a vet as soon as possible, because eye issues can turn into emergencies very quickly. The discharge can be due to conjunctivitis, a foreign body, or even a scratch in the cornea (this condition is dangerous as it can quickly progress and even cause a dog to lose their eye). In the meantime, you can get Pippa an E-collar (or "cone") to prevent her from scratching the eye and causing further damage and apply artificial tears to the eye two to three times per day. I hope this helps and that Pippa starts feeling better soon!

If the eye is not too uncomfortable and the only abnormality is the green discharge she should be ok to wait until Saturday. However if she is in pain, pawing at the eye or squinting, best to have the eye checked over sooner rather than later.

My dog's red, droopy eyes and discharge recur. What should I do?

Moo is adorable, but his eyes certainly seem uncomfortable given his squinting! Squinting is a sign of eye pain in dogs. Coupled with the yellow/green discharge, it is concerning that he may have an eye infection, corneal ulcer or uveitis (inflammation within the eyes). Allergies may be contributing, but the yellow/green discharge makes me suspicious that there is another issue present. If his eyes are itchy at all, make sure that Moo wears an e-collar (cone) until you can take him to the vet today or tomorrow to prevent further eye injury. I hope that all goes well!

Unfortunately no, there are no OTC medications you can use on Bella's eye. If she has green pus, that can indicate an eye infection and she needs to see a vet right away. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take Bella into an ER vet now to diagnose and treat her eye.
