Why is my dog panting and shivering in bouts, then acting normal?

I'm sorry to hear that Lola is not acting herself. Shaking and panting could be signs of several different things such as pain, anxiety or early signs of illness. If she's acting normal otherwise, I would watch her closely. If she goes back to her normal self tomorrow, there is probably nothing to worry about. If she continues this tomorrow, especially if other signs of illness develop, I would take her to a veterinarian. Please do not give her any over the counter human medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen or Tylenol as these can have serious side effects in animals. If you feel that she is in pain, it would be best to take her to a veterinarian tonight.

I can certainly see how this would be very alarming to witness. The symptoms you describe may be related to a disease process affecting an organ system (more often the neurologic (seizure event) or cardiac (heart event) systems). What i would recommend is a visit to your family veterinarian for a physical exam, to discuss the events, and to discuss additional testing (like bloodwork to rule out organ changes). It is also extremely helpful to get a video of an event so that your vet can watch it. Also, given the age of your pup, make sure there is nothing new in the environment that he could be snacking on that may be toxic to dogs (plants, etc.). Poor Jolene. Good job starting the bland diet! She likely feels poorly from the diarrhea, and it may be she has a fever causing the panting and shaking. If you can take her temperature rectally, I recommend doing that. A dog's normal temperature is between 101-102.5F. If her temperature is above 103F, take her into a vet right away. Otherwise, wait and see how her poop looks while on the bland diet. If she continues to have diarrhea, have her seen by a vet.

This is a quite generic but concerning sign. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. A check up is needed if these vague signs last for more than 24hours.
