What caused my dog's broken eye vessel after dental cleaning?

My dog just had a dental cleaning under general anesthesia and now has a broken blood vessel in the eye. What caused the broken blood vessel?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. A broken vessel in an eye can be caused by a few different things including trauma, infection, high blood pressure, etc. If the eye is otherwise not injured then either the stress of being in hospital caused Sascha's blood pressure to increase and she burst a vessel (if she is a stressed dog), or she might have had a bit of a trauma during the dental, as sometimes you have to hold their head still while doing extractions. Even with the most gentle and carefully performed dental procedure, this can happen, as those vessels can burst with a small amount of pressure, and you need to put a bit of pressure on the head to support it to properly and safely remove the tooth. You can always ask your vet as well. As long as Sascha isn't squinting, and can see ok, it will heal up with time. Best of luck with Sascha.

Given the recent dental cleaning and extraction I would be concerned that this may be a complication of the procedure. I would recommend calling your veterinarian tomorrow to schedule a recheck. Your vet will be able to do a thorough physical exam, look in Libby's eyes and mouth, and give you a better idea of what is going on for her. Monitor Libby carefully tonight to make sure that she is not developing other symptoms (such as lethargy, or bleeding from other places), and that she is not rubbing and bothering at the eye. If she starts to bother at it she needs to wear an ecollar/plastic cone until your vet can look at her.

My puppy's eye has a burst blood vessel. Should I see a vet?

This usually happens with trauma to the eye or if the dog has been choked. If it is just a burst blood vessel, it should resolve with time, like a bruise. If there is any swelling, squinting, cloudiness of the clear part of the eye or discharge, I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian to make sure there is not something more serious that requires treatment.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Lucy. This is a subconjunctival hemorrhage of the sclera of the eyes. This means that some blood vessels in the white part of the eye (sclera) have ruptured. This can be secondary to trauma or too much pressure on the neck. I would contact the veterinary hospital that did the vaccines and ask them how well did she tolerate the visit or did she need lots of restraining. I would also question the place where she had her nails done. I would ask the same thing. It is possible that she suffered some trauma at the dog park but I'm skeptical about this. Looks like it's from restraining her for some procedures. Good luck

My dog has a bulging blood vessel in his eye, no pain. Is it serious?

It depends where the blood vessel is located. Whether the vessel you are seeing is in or on the surface of the eye can really help determine if this should be cause for concern. There can be normal blood vessels that are on the white part (sclera) of the eye ball itself. However, any evidence of a blood vessel inside the eyeball is not normal. Bulging vessels can occur if a dog has high blood pressure or something blocking flow of the blood through the vessel. It may be best to have your veterinarian examine Diesel's eye to ensure that this is not a sign of a disease affecting his entire body, such as high blood pressure.

My dog has a blood clot in his eye after playing. What should I do?

Judging by the picture it looks as if Pompeu has a burst blood vessel in his eye. This usually occurs from increased pressure in the eye or some type of injury or trauma. With time the blood will go away and there is nothing you need to do for the eye. If you notice any discharge, your dog is holding the eye closed, or if the eye seems swollen at all, then I would recommend you taking him into see the vet. Why is my dog's eye inflamed and watering after dental surgery?

It is possible that Poppet's eye issue could be related to dry eyes while under anesthesia, or she may have developed a corneal ulcer/abrasion incidentally. Since eyes are such delicate structures, I would recommend taking Poppet back to her vet for evaluation sooner rather than later. Be sure that she is wearing an e-collar (cone) until you can take her to the vet to prevent Poppet from scratching or rubbing her eye, as this could worsen any existing issue. I hope that she feels better soon!

Hi there. Yes, pressure / strangulation at the neck can absolutely cause ruptured blood vessels and sclera hemorrhage. I would visit with the instructor about other methods of training or visit with your husband about the amount of force used.
