My dog has bright yellow poop and won't eat. What should I do?

Hi there and thanks for posting! Hard poop can be secondary to constipation, so I would add a little more fiber to Teddy's diet if you haven't already. Plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) works very well or green beans and carrots. The runny poop could be caused by a parasitic infection or bacterial infection. His poop is bright yellow b/c of his current diet (just rice and cottage cheese). He should have some protein in there, so I would suggest adding chicken or ground turkey. Also as long as he is not straining to poop, there is no cause for concern for the fewer stools, especially since he isn't eating anything with much substance. As long as he is acting normal, there is no major cause for concern here. Slowly transition him back to his normal diet once your vet says he is good to do so, and his stools should return to normal. Did anyone feed him anything other than his puppy food? If so he may have an upset stomach. He can also have one if he has intestinal parasites or a virus. If only Caesar could talk! This type of behavior could be related to something medical like a stomach ache or it could be behavioral. The greenish color of the stool can indicate bacterial infection as well. Unfortunately, it's impossible to know which one is the cause without a physical exam and checking the stool. I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian who will check for abnormalities on the physical exam. They may also try a trial of medications to soothe the stomach. That is not a problem but could be an early sign of diarrhoea. As a first approach I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. A change in food can sometimes cause the stool to change color slightly or become loser, however you did mention it was the same food, just a new bag. Checking to see if there were any ingredient changes between bags may alert you to a cause. A bland meal of boiled rice and chicken may also help with any minor GI upset while transitioning food. Other issues can include GI upset, parasites, illness, food allergies, etc, so if the problem does not resolve bringing in Joey along with a stool sample to your vet can help rule out some of these other issues and narrow down the cause.

I can see that some of this stool looks a little yellow and that there might be some foreign material, but otherwise it looks formed and I don't see anything concerning like blood or mucous. As long as Bo isn't straining to defecate, vomiting or not eating as well I wouldn't be concerned about his stool. The makeup probably isn't to blame since I would expect you to see changes a day or two after it was ingested, not a week later.
