My dog has bright red diarrhea. Is it an emergency or can I wait?

I'm sorry Grayson isn't doing well! Because he's alert and drinking water, it's ok to wait to take him into the vet in the morning. Now if the diarrhea continues, you see blood in it, he becomes very lethargic, and/or he starts vomiting, then I would take him into an ER vet tonight. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

Although he is acting normal now, that can change if he is having some sort of bleeding disorder. If there is a constant flow of blood that is oozing regardless of whether he is going potty or not, then that is a sign of a potentially serious clotting disorder. In this case it would be in his best interest to get him seen tonight if the oozing continues for more than 30mins to an hour. Blood loss is best dealt with early on, instead of waiting until the pets blood supply has depleted to dangerous levels. However if the oozing is not abundant and doesn't seem to be continuous, Zeus may be ok to be seen first thing in the morning.

If his energy level has been normal today and he is not vomiting, and has been eating and drinking, and he is able to relax and go to sleep then he can probably wait until the morning. If, however, he has been vomiting, is lethargic, or he is unable to rest then you may consider a trip to the emergency vet.

If there is bloody diarrhea then I would take him to the ER clinic tonight. If it is diarrhea and he is otherwise acting fine still with no vomiting, then you can check on him through the night to make sure nothing is changing and have him checked in the morning. If there is vomiting or lethargy or he does not eat or drink then I would take him tonight also. You can always try boiled chicken and rice to help with digestion also as this is bland and easy to break down and can help with loose stool

It indicates inflammation in the colon. Causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites (so bring fresh stool sample), viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), HGE (hemorrhagic gastro-enteritis), pancreatitis, food allergy or intolerance, reaction to a new treat/food/table food. Oh no poor guy. As long as he isn't lethargic, doesn't have pale gums or is otherwise stable, you can wait the 5 hrs to get him seen. He may be having a stress colitis, in which case antibiotics and probiotics along with a bland diet are the treatment recommendations. However the vet will want to examine him thoroughly so that he is treated appropriately. I hope Boone feels better soon. Best wishes and take care.

It really depends how bad his condition is, if he is very lethargic, barely walking and vomiting very often then you should take him to the emergencies right away, if he is not too lethargic and not vomiting non stop then you can wait until the morning. do not feed him anymore, just leave water available but no food until you manage to get him to the vet.
