My dog is leaking from his rear at night. Is it an emergency?

If he’s otherwise normal you should be fine watching him tonight. He could have a ruptured anal abscess, or be passing a bone. He could also have a mass inside the rectum. Severe bloody diarrhea in a dog that is lethargic and not eating is a medical emergency but this sounds like he’s stable so bring him to your regular veterinarian in the morning so they can diagnose and treat his problem. I'm sorry Grayson isn't doing well! Because he's alert and drinking water, it's ok to wait to take him into the vet in the morning. Now if the diarrhea continues, you see blood in it, he becomes very lethargic, and/or he starts vomiting, then I would take him into an ER vet tonight. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

Although he is acting normal now, that can change if he is having some sort of bleeding disorder. If there is a constant flow of blood that is oozing regardless of whether he is going potty or not, then that is a sign of a potentially serious clotting disorder. In this case it would be in his best interest to get him seen tonight if the oozing continues for more than 30mins to an hour. Blood loss is best dealt with early on, instead of waiting until the pets blood supply has depleted to dangerous levels. However if the oozing is not abundant and doesn't seem to be continuous, Zeus may be ok to be seen first thing in the morning.

This problem is likely to be related to a colitis (inflammation of the last part of the intestine). It is quite common and usually dietary related. It is nothing to be extremely worried about unless signs of lethargy and vomiting are noticed. Hydration is usually not an big concern at this stage as there may be a mild dehydration but not clinically significant at this stage. It should be ok to wait until morning unless Gizmo becomes very lethargic or starts vomiting constantly, in such a scenario i would recommend to take him to the out of hours, if he is otherwise more or less fine in himself this can wait for your regular vet in the morning.

I am sorry to hear about Mario. If his energy level has been normal today and he is not vomiting, and has been eating and drinking, and he is able to relax and go to sleep then he can probably wait until the morning. If, however, he has been vomiting, is lethargic, or he is unable to rest then you may consider a trip to the emergency vet.

Hi ! If the amount of fresh blood is little I would not recommend an emergency check up. Fresh blood is probably coming from the lower intestine, most likely the colon or from around the anus where these is some irritation from the diarrhoea. I would recommend a bland diet of chicken and rice , or fish and rice or Hill's GI prescription food and a good probiotic. Diarrhoea should settle in a few days, but if Val is not eating or she seems to pass a lot of diarrhoea, or if the blood increases, I would recommend a vet check up. Hope this helps !
