My puppy has bloody diarrhea. Can he wait for the vet until morning?

Hi I have a pup he’s boxer pit mix almost 1 years old and he’s been pooping a lot today and it’s diarrhea and now there is blood if I take him to the vet tomorrow will he be okay for the night ?

If he is otherwise ok then he should be fine until the morning. It isn't uncommon for blood to appear in diarrhea. It indicates inflammation in the colon. Causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites (so bring fresh stool sample), viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), HGE (hemorrhagic gastro-enteritis), pancreatitis, food allergy or intolerance, reaction to a new treat/food/table food.

Oh no poor puppy! You are right that changing food too quickly can cause these issues, and the problem here is that he is vomiting, has diarrhea, and now has bloody stool. Even though he's acting normally, his symptoms need to be checked out by a vet immediately. Please take him into one now to get these treated. Best of luck.

It sounds like Diesel has diarrhea, and the spotting of blood could be due to irritation of the GI tract. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, you still see blood in his poop, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Because Cooper is a puppy the diarrhea may be due to intestinal parasites, infection , bacterial overgrowth, or eating something that upset his stomach.

You can try offering Cooper a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to see if this settles his stomach. However, if the diarrhea lasts longer than 24 hours or is accompanied by decreased appetite, vomiting, or lethargy then he should be examined by a veterinarian. If the diarrhea persists he may need prescription medication and fluids to prevent dehydration.

My dog has bloody diarrhea and is straining. Can I wait for vet?

Oh no poor guy. As long as he isn't lethargic, doesn't have pale gums or is otherwise stable, you can wait the 5 hrs to get him seen. He may be having a stress colitis, in which case antibiotics and probiotics along with a bland diet are the treatment recommendations. However the vet will want to examine him thoroughly so that he is treated appropriately. I hope Boone feels better soon. Best wishes and take care.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Colby. This falls into one of these categories since you say that he isn't acting sick- Any clinical sign (diarrhea) that persists, worsens, or other signs develop (nausea, vomiting, lethargy, etc) this indicates that Colby should be seen by your veterinarian to assess what is going on. So I would just monitor his stools over the next 6-12 hours and watch for other signs. If things worsen, signs persist, or new signs develop, take him in immediately and let your vet take a detailed history and do a physical exam. They may advise some tests which could include fecal/blood tests, x-rays, etc to determine if a problem is present. A treatment plan can be made once a cause is determined or suspected. Bloody diarrhea can be caused by many things including intestinal worms, dietary problems, dietary indiscretion (eating things a dog should not eat), exposure to a toxin by ingestion, infection, etc. Good luck with Colby.

When blood is present, it can allow bacteria from the colon access to the blood stream. If he is still acting normal and drinking, you can likely wait until morning to have him seen. My dog has bloody diarrhea and is leaking blood. Can I wait for vet?

Although he is acting normal now, that can change if he is having some sort of bleeding disorder. If there is a constant flow of blood that is oozing regardless of whether he is going potty or not, then that is a sign of a potentially serious clotting disorder. In this case it would be in his best interest to get him seen tonight if the oozing continues for more than 30mins to an hour. Blood loss is best dealt with early on, instead of waiting until the pets blood supply has depleted to dangerous levels. However if the oozing is not abundant and doesn't seem to be continuous, Zeus may be ok to be seen first thing in the morning.

My puppy has bloody diarrhea but is playful. Should I be concerned?

I am very sorry to hear that Theodore is experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. In young puppies eating something they shouldn’t have and gastrointestinal worms are very common. If you haven’t done a de-worming treatment with Theodore yet it would be a good idea to. Broad spectrum puppy safe dewormers are available at most pet stores and at your local veterinarian. Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few hours I would continue to monitor Theordore at home. Here is what you can do for him; Rest his gastrointestinal tract by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. I also find that boiled, mashed skinless sweet potato is helpful for diarrhoea. If Theodore does not improve, has profuse vomiting or diarrhoea, you notice more fresh blood, He seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian immediately.
