My golden retriever has breathing issues and eye discharge. What to do?

Breathing irregularly is a concern in a senior dog like Talula, it could be due to heart disease, a respiratory infection, or something more serious like cancer. The eye discharge can be due to an eye infection. I'd have her seen by a vet today for these issues to make sure she is ok.

Horner's syndrome is a collection of symptoms that result from problems with nerves responsible for the movement of the eyelids and the pupil. Horner's syndrome in a puppy would be extremely rare. It is difficult to tell from the picture if one or both eyes are affected, and I cannot see much of the eyes or pupils. If you came to this diagnosis because he is holding one eye closed, there are some things that are more likely, such as a corneal ulcer or conjunctivitis. It looks like Grace's third eyelid is up more then her eye is drooping. I would recommend a veterinarian. SHe may just have some irritation or infection in her eye but she could also have scratched her cornea. I would recommend taking Remington to your vet as soon as possible. Most dogs will squint if the eye is painful. The pictures make it look like he may have a skin infection beside his eye, and I'm concerned if he is squinting he may have an infection or irritation in his eye as well. The diarrhea may be related to what is going on with his eye or may be caused by something else, like intestinal parasites, eating something he shouldn't have, or bacterial or viral infection. Regardless, I think it would be best you take him in to get checked out and get some treatment for both his eye and diarrhea.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor guy! if the discharge didn't resolve with an ocular antibiotic it likely isn't a bacterial conjunctivitis. I would recommend having your Vet test for dry eye and then treat for allergies. Since he is rubbing his chin he could have allergies to his environment. He may need an eye ointment with steroids in it and be put on a systemic antihistamine. Below is a link to one you can try. I agree that Luna Belle may be starting to brew an infection. Continue to keep the area clean and make sure she does not rub at it since this could make it worse. If she continues to have the discharge beyond 48hrs, if it starts getting worse or if it seems like it bothers her, have her examined by the veterinarian who will likely prescribe medication.
