My French Bulldog has bloody soft stool, vet meds not helping?

It sounds as Albert is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an antibiotic course and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

Hi there. I'm sorry to hear that Lucy has bloody stool! Bright red blood in the stool is an indication of inflammation in the colon wall. She may have eaten something that didn't agree with her, or she may have gotten a bacterial infection of her gut causing the inflammation. I would feed her a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice and see if that clears it up. If she is still having blood in her stool by tomorrow mid day, or if she begins acting sick (not eating, vomiting) I'd have her seen right away. I hope that helps. Streaks of blood in the poop can be due to passing hard stool that irritates the rectum, parasites, bloody anal discharge, irritable bowel disease or a rectal mass. To start I would check a fecal sample for parasites. Then if it continues I would have your veterinarian express Sushi's anal sacs, and perhaps do a rectal palpation to check for polyps or a tumor. If this is due to stress from irritable bowel symdrome they can prescribe medication. Dogs and cats have blood in their poop fairly regularly and usually it's nothing serious if they are otherwise normal. Harleigh could have worms even though you don't see any in her feces, and that would cause blood in her feces. I would take her into the vet with a sample of her feces. The vet can examine her feces under a microscope for signs of eggs from intestinal parasites, and can prescribe her a deworming treatment.

It can be IBD among other things, the next step would be a specialist ultrasound, if no definitive diagnosis is obtained after the ultrasound the last resort step is surgery to take samples from the intestines for histological analysis.

Rapidly switching food can cause the GI upset you are seeing in Griffey, and I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Also make sure that he is up to date on his deworming treatments, as that can cause bloody diarrhea. Should he start vomiting as well, I would be concerned that the vomiting and his blood diarrhea could be caused by parovirus, which is a life threatening infection in puppies. Should he start to vomit and/or becomes very lethargic and anorexic, take him into the vet immediately. Home remedy: Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet (the new food).

As long as he is eating normally and active then medication at home seems like a reasonable treatment plan. Unfortunately our diagnostic tests aren't always 100% and sometimes we get false results. If he begins vomiting, acting sicker or depressed take him back to vet immediately. But from your description it sounds reasonable that Gordo may have bacterial colitis. Follow the vet recomendations on diet and medication and finish out any antibiotics as prescribed.
