My vaccinated Shih Tzu has bloody poop. Is it parvo? What should I do?

It is possible sweetie had a case of gastric upset. This could be due to something sweetie ate or got a hold of. IF she is eating, drinking, and no longer vomiting I would not be concerned. IF she continues to vomit or have blood in her stool i recommend takin her to a vet for medications to resolve the diarrhea.

It very well could be parvo. I suggest you get her to your vet ASAP for an exam and testing. You really need to know if it is parvo or not. Either way, your vet will help you determine the cause of the bloody diarrhea and give you treatment options. Then, once this diarrhea is cleared up you can get her started on her vaccines. This is a serious medical problem that can become life threatening. It could be parvovirus or hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, or due to a severe intestinal parasite overload. Regardless she could become severely dehydrated and anemic so she needs veterinary care right away. They will give fluids and medication to control the vomiting and diarrhea. I would be very concerned about Yogi. Has he had any vaccines? There are several possible causes of this in young dogs. Parvovirus is high on my list. Intestinal parasites is also on my list. If the veterinarian isn’t offering diagnostics like a parvo test or intestinal parasite test, I would go for a second opinion. I think that Yogi needs some oral medications and possible food change. Hello, sorry to hear about Paigee. It most instances, bloody diarrhea is caused by inflammation of the GI tract. If frank blood, this is most often a large intestine inflammation, if dark blood, then this could be from the stomach or small intestine. Most often, inflammation of the GI tract is caused by some form of dietary indiscretion and is self limiting to a few days. If signs worsen, if she develops vomiting, innapetence, pain or lethargy, then she should be seen by a veterinarian. If she has frank blood diarrhea, she should be seen by her veterinarian. In the interim, you may try to feed her a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and low fat cottage cheese for the next 3-5 days. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Oh no. I would take him to a vet as soon as possible and have him checked for intestinal parasites and parvovirus. Either one could be the cause of his bloody discharge and need to be identified quickly so that he can start treatment right away. Howver, you can offer Pedialyte non-flavored to help keep him from getting too dehydrated. It is unfortunate that a pet you just adopted is ill; however, you can't help Shiner on your own and you should allow your veterinarian to care for him and his illness from here moving forward. Based on the picture, it looks as though Hamilton has a bit of dark red blood in his stool. The fact that the blood is red tells me that it's coming from the colon since blood from the stomach or small intestines is black from being at least partially digested. Bordetella vaccines won't cause any bloody stools, but stress or anxiety (possibly from his vet visit?) can cause a bit of stress colitis. Likewise, blood in the stool can occur with intestinal parasites, viruses, or some blood clotting conditions. Since Hamilton otherwise seems completely normal, I would start by asking your vet to send a stool sample to the lab to check for intestinal parasites, including various microscopic worm eggs, Giardia, and coccidia. In the meantime, also keep a close eye on his stool to see if this is an ongoing issue. If this was a one time occurrence, I wouldn't be concerned at all. However, if this is an ongoing issue, it's worth taking him back to the vet for further investigation and testing. I hope that everything goes well!
