My new puppy has gooey blood in his poop. What should I do now?

I would be very suspicious that your puppy may have contracted parvovirus. Please take her in to your local vet right away to get tested for parvovirus and also a fecal exam. If she has parvo she will need medicaitons from your vet, fluids and possible extensive care to get treat her conditon. Parvo is a very deadly virus in puppies even with treatment, but the pet has the best chance of survival the earlier you start treatment. Try offering her small amounts of Pedialyte non-flavored by mouth via syringe or small turkey baster to try and keep her hydrated. Puppies dehydrate very quickly when they are having loose stool. This type of diarrhea could be due to G.I. parasites, which is not uncommon at all in puppies. This could also be related to the stress of a new home environment or diet change if it's occurred in the past week or so. There are over-the-counter deworming medication. However you may want to contact your veterinarian and see if they want you to bring in a fecal sample so they can tell you for sure if she has G.I. parasites. Generally speaking deworming medication it's fairly safe and would not be harmful if your puppy did not have parasites. However there are some G.I. parasites that require prescription strength deworming medication. But your veterinarian could do the fecal test and tell you if that is the case.

It sounds and looks as Marvel is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an antibiotic course and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

These foods that you are feeding Shinchan are not appropriate for a puppy, and that could be the cause of his bloody feces. Dogs should never be given milk, as dairy causes GI upset. Shinchan should only receive a puppy formulated dry food. Other causes of bloody feces include parvovirus, intestinal parasites, eating something rotten, or a foreign body. Given that I'm not sure if he's vaccinated or not, I would have him seen by a vet right away. Parvovirus is a fatal infection, but there is no cure for it, only supportive treatment. The vet can diagnose what is causing his bloody feces and can treat him for it. Please bring him into a vet now.

The most common reason that we will see soft stool (with or without blood or mucous in it) in a puppy is some type of intestinal parasite. You didn't mention how old Ivy is or if your vet has checked a stool sample, but puppies can commonly have intestinal parasites. Some are microscopic, so the only way to know that they have them is for your vet to look under the microscope. And even if a puppy has been dewormed, it is common for them to have other intestinal parasites since there are no many different types of parasites and they each require a specific type of deworming. So, my first recommendation is to have your veterinarian do a fecal check on Ivy, then decide on an other treatment. With these pups, there is always a potential for parasites or bacterial overgrowth to cause the symptoms. I would recommend to get Parks in for an exam and to have the stool checked for parasites. That is usually a good sign if you don’t see any more blood, which is what I’m concerned you were seeing in the stool. It’s better to be safe and also to make sure he doesn’t have any parasites to spread to his new human family. There are other causes for blood in the stool as well and these can vary from a new diet to internal organ damage. The first step is to rule out the most common things.
