My poodle's head cyst is bleeding. What can I put on it safely?

Hi there. If the cyst is bleeding right now, the only thing you can do at home is apply direct pressure to it with a paper towel or wash cloth until the bleeding stops. Then, I would recommend taking Mocha to the vet to have this checked when you are able to. He/she can advise you on whether the cyst should be surgically removed, or if any other treatment (antibiotics, etc.) is needed.

My own dog has several of the same lesions. Yes, they can become infected but typically if that happens the infection is localized and resolves without intervention as long as you can prevent Fifi from licking, chewing or scratching the area. A few of the cysts were becoming more of a problem so I had Lori's removed. If Fifi's cysts continue to bleed or become infected, discuss removal with your veterinarian. If the cysts are small enough, removal can be done with a sedative and local pain block. Try not to worry, Fido should be fine. Apply an E-collar of needed to keep her from traumatizing the area.

Bruce would need a complete physical exam and lab work done prior to any anesthetic procedure to make sure he is healthy and stable enough for surgery. An echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) may be recommended to assess cardiac architecture and function. Once this is completed, your veterinarian can determine if surgery is possible. In the meantime, place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further scratching. Antibiotics may be indicated for infection. Your veterinarian can dispense some after an exam.

You can put an antibacterial cream on it 2-3 times a day for a few days and just monitor it, if it seems to be getting worse - take Ace to your vet in order to get it checked and treated as it may be a fungal or parasite related lesion as well.

It is very possible this is a small tumor, or even a wart that has bled. Warts are very common on poodles, as are a variety of benign, & occasionally, malignant tumors. I would have your veterinarian take a look t make sure this is not too serious. If it is a simple wart, it can be removed surgically, with laser, or even frozen with a wart-off type product. Or, you can just watch it. The problem with warts is you take one off, & another pops up elsewhere. So we usually just monitor them. Signs of infection include redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, and pus. Gently clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap. If you see any signs of infection, have her seen by a vet. I hope this helps!
