My dog has heart disease. Is surgery safe for his bleeding head cyst?

That does sound very concerning! I would apply pressure to try to stop the bleeding. Because it's been a continual problem, the cyst may need to be removed surgically. I recommend having a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis done on Treeko. This will give the vet a detail picture of his anesthetic risk, and can make the determination if he can be put under anesthesia safely.

you can put some antiseptic or antibiotic cream on it, if she is scratching it it would also be a god idea to put an e-collar around her neck to prevent her from doing any more damage. If the bleeding carries on, the cyst will need to be removed surgically.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Just because he has a heart murmur does not mean he cannot go under anesthesia. There are also other methods such as using a local anesthetic to numb the area and removing it while he is awake if the heart is that much of a concern. Special precautions are taken wi dogs that have a heart murmur and need anesthesia. I have placed many dogs with heart murmurs under anesthesia and have never had any complications. I've even done my fair share of patients in congestive heart failure under anesthesia and they have done well. I would discuss with you vet the other options to remove this besides anesthesia if you are uncomfortable putting him under. You can also discuss freezing the cyst with your vet. Hi there. If the cyst is bleeding right now, the only thing you can do at home is apply direct pressure to it with a paper towel or wash cloth until the bleeding stops. Then, I would recommend taking Mocha to the vet to have this checked when you are able to. He/she can advise you on whether the cyst should be surgically removed, or if any other treatment (antibiotics, etc.) is needed.

Poor Osc has some awful health troubles at the moment! I can understand your reservation about doing surgery when he has heart problems, but as a vet, I would not recommend doing sugery if I thought the risks were too high. I don't believe your vet would recommend surgery if they didn't think it would be safe to do on him. While any surgery and anesthesia has its complications, which does increase with specific health problems, that doesn't mean it can be done safely. During surgery, the animal is monitored very closely, and the anesthetic drug protocol is tailored for the animal and it's current health problems. Ultimately, it is up to you as to whether or not you want Osc to have surgery, but again I don't think your vet would have suggested it if they felt it would be unsafe. I recommend speaking to your vet about your concerns, and how they will handle things during the surgery to keep him as safe as possible. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Depending on the size of the mass, local anesthetic could be used but the use of sedatives in a patient with heart disease can be risky. If she is not in heart failure but has a heart murmur, anesthesia can still safely be used, just used with some precautions. It depends on the veterinarian and what they are comfortable with. She also wouldn't be sedated with lidocaine. Lidocaine would be injected around the mass to numb the area prior to the procedure. Dahlia would be sedated using a combination of other drugs in addition to the lidocaine injection. I hope this helps!
