My dog's brown, gel-like eye gunk that hardens. How to clean?

If you just need to remove the eye discharge, you can put warm water on a cotton ball and gently wipe the inside corner of the eye. If the discharge quickly returns or you notice discharge in the eye as well, you can use any sterile saline eye wash made for humans. If the discharge is not resolving after a couple of day or is getting worse at any point, then I would have your veterinarian recheck the eye and determine if any medication is needed to resolve the problem. This will depend on the cause of the discharge. If Max has yellow or green discharge he likely has an eye infection or eye condition that needs to be treated by a veterinarian with medications suitable for infection or antiinflammatories, etc. If the "gunk" is just reddish tear stains, there really is no remedy that works 100 %. You cna try some 3% hydrogen peroxide on the stained hair if your dog is white. Otherwise just use a moist paper towel and regularly wipe it off as much and as gently as you can. When in doubt, have Max's eyes examined by your vet.

Poor Boomer! It sounds like he may have an eye infection. You can flush his eyes with a sterile saline solution, but he ultimately has to see a vet for treatment. Leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take him into the vet first thing Monday to have his eyes examined and treated. Best of luck!

This is very common in smaller breed dogs. It is normal eye drainage called epiphora. As long as the drainage isn't green or yellow and Scribbles isn't favoring her eyes, then I am not concerned that it is infection. I would recommend to use a warm damp wash cloth daily to clean under the eyes. I also recommend to have the hair under the eyes trimmed short or shaved. You can ask your vet or groomer to help you with this usually for little to no cost. I do not recommend to do this yourself as it is really easily to accidentally poke their eyes without proper restraint. Finally, if you do not like the brown color it makes, then you can consider using a probiotic or angel eyes which both will SOMETIMES work to decrease the darkness in the fur. Unfortunately it doesn't always work. You can take some comfort in knowing that as long as the eye drainage is frequently cleaned and isn't causing a skin infection then the brown discoloration is strictly cosmetic. I hope this helps!

Dogs can get eye infections, allergies that lead to infections, scratches on the cornea and dry eye. These will all lead to increased eye discharge. Maverick’s discharge looks slightly green from the photos and this is generally indicative of an infection. If the green discharge lasts longer than 24hours, he seems uncomfortable, he is rubbing at the eye or he is squinting, he needs to see the veterinarian.
