My dog ate a white chocolate cookie. Should I be worried about him?

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The main concern in chocolate is the cocoa itself, and there is very little cocoa in white chocolate. I don't see in your profile what type of pet you have, but if it's a dog or cat they will likely be fine. Watch for signs of GI upset, as that can happen with any kind of new food (especially with higher fat content) but I suspect they'll be fine. However, I would recommend sticking with healthier treats to share with your pet and keeping ice cream and chocolate for yourself :-) Hope this helps!

The fudge may cause some gastrointestinal upset so monitor him for any vomiting and diarrhea. You could feed a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice if you notice any GI signs. If he experiences any lethargy or persistent vomiting and diarrhea, then he should be examined by your vet.

I see he's a good sized dog at 55lbs, so chances are eating this cookie is not going to cause him any problems. At most, you may see some GI upset, but I wouldn't be surprised if you don't see anything at all. Luckily white chocolate does not contain as much of the substances that can be toxic to dogs (Caffeine and theobromine) as can be found in other types of chocolate, so I'm hoping this should not be a significant health problem, however it could cause some issues based on how much Mung ate. It does matter that it is white chocolate - fortunately white chocolate is not toxic! It could cause some mild stomach upset so if Xina vomits or develops diarrhea I’d recommend seeing your vet. Otherwise no treatment is required.

The amount of chocolate he ate in those cookies and the size he is makes me feel that he's probably going to be fine. The amount of chocolate and the darkness of it are the main factors, along with the size of your dog in determining if he will have adverse effects. Monitor him for vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, muscle rigidity, rapid breathing without exertion, or increased body temperature. If he displays ony of these symptoms, get him to a vet right away.
