My dog ate a stone. Does no gas mean less risk of full blockage?

Usually the signs (vomiting, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, lethargy, inappetence) are seen in the following 48hours after ingestion. It will likely pass. The symptoms of an issue to look out for including vomiting/especially within an hour of eating, straining to defecate, not popping. If you are willing to sift through each bowel movement until you find the small stone, that will provide additional peace of mind. Otherwise screening abdominal x-rays at your vet can determine whether the stone is stuck somewhere and are recommended especially if vomiting/in appearance or straining to defecate are noted. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. As long as she is eating, drinking as normal and passing normal stools, she is not in any danger. The symptoms of of gastrointestinal blockage include vomiting, lack of appetite, lethargy, lack of stools. If Pearl definitely ate the stones and has not passed them, an x-ray of the abdomen would be a good idea. It may happen that the stones are still sitting in the stomach but not causing any clinical symptoms. They may move down to the small intestines and form an abstraction at some point. Stones are very easy to detect on x-ray, so this would give definitive answer if there is anything to worry about or not. Pumpkin or any other laxative treatment / diet will not be a good idea for Pearl.

Hello. Stones can either pass through the system without too much of an issue, or they can cause a huge problem and require surgery to take out. Unfortunately you are at a waiting game. If Paddy is eating/drinking, and normal in energy, then just keep watching him and don't worry. If he is fine after a few days you are OK. If Paddy starts vomiting, stops eating, is weak, sore when you touch his abdomen, or is having trouble pooping or not passing any feces, they you need to get him to a vet ASAP for some x-rays and possible surgery. As long as your dog is not lethargic, retching and /or having diarrhea you can probably wait a few days in case you cannot take your dog to a vet tomorrow. However if any of those signs show then this is an emergency and your dog needs to be seen by a vet right away as there may be an intestinal obstruction caused by more stones. She will likely have more stones in her stomach, as dogs make it a habit to eat stones. These probably can be removed by making her regurgitate them with a medicine called apomorphine, or removed endoscopically , if they are still in the stomach, or via surgery.

At this stage feeding bulky food and monitoring is the best way to go. Signs of intestinal blockage are obvious and you will be able to notice them right away. Dogs with a blockage go off their food, vomit and show abdominal pain. They become weak and lethargic. What is also very important, dogs with a blockage are not passing any stools (soemtimes they try to pass but they are not able to). So, for now keep any eye on your dog and if you see any of these signs get in touch with your way right away. He is a large dog, so there is a good chance that he will pass the piece of leather in his stools.

Whenever foreign objects like this are ingested, there is no guarantee that they will pass. The best advice is to monitor Honey for the next 24-48 hrs for any signs of an intestinal obstruction, which includes: excessive vomiting (food and water), lack of appetite, few to no feces, and severe lethargy. If seen, then its best to take Honey to your local vet for an x-ray of her belly and further care. Hopefully the rock was small enough to pass on its own.
