My dog ate gravel, vomited some, but is acting normal. What to do?

As long as your dog is not lethargic, retching and /or having diarrhea you can probably wait a few days in case you cannot take your dog to a vet tomorrow. However if any of those signs show then this is an emergency and your dog needs to be seen by a vet right away as there may be an intestinal obstruction caused by more stones. She will likely have more stones in her stomach, as dogs make it a habit to eat stones. These probably can be removed by making her regurgitate them with a medicine called apomorphine, or removed endoscopically , if they are still in the stomach, or via surgery.

If not, there is the potential for one to become lodged in his intestines. This would make him very ill. Signs of this include vomiting, lethargy and a decreased appetite. If this occurs, you will need to find a veterinarian for him. In the meantime, offer him some water . Wait several hours as he just vomited and then you can offer a small amount of his food. It will likely pass. The symptoms of an issue to look out for including vomiting/especially within an hour of eating, straining to defecate, not popping. If you are willing to sift through each bowel movement until you find the small stone, that will provide additional peace of mind. Otherwise screening abdominal x-rays at your vet can determine whether the stone is stuck somewhere and are recommended especially if vomiting/in appearance or straining to defecate are noted. Hi. If Maggie just ate one small rock there shouldn't be much of a concern. Keep an eye on her eating and pooping habits but if all is normal it should pass. Be certain to watch and make sure this is not a common thing for her to do. Dogs that continuously eat rocks or eat a large number can become obstructed. If you notice Maggie having vomiting or trouble defecating then have her checked by a vet.

The symptoms of of gastrointestinal blockage include vomiting, lack of appetite, lethargy, lack of stools. If Pearl definitely ate the stones and has not passed them, an x-ray of the abdomen would be a good idea. It may happen that the stones are still sitting in the stomach but not causing any clinical symptoms. They may move down to the small intestines and form an abstraction at some point. Stones are very easy to detect on x-ray, so this would give definitive answer if there is anything to worry about or not. Pumpkin or any other laxative treatment / diet will not be a good idea for Pearl.

If the vomiting, lack of normal thirst/appetite continue, then I would advise having your vet evaluate him. Rock ingestion can be a major problem in dogs. They can become stuck in the stomach or intestines causing a foreign body obstruction. Your vet can take a history, examine him, and then discuss a treatment plan as warranted. Good luck

Hi, sorry to hear Rosco is having a problem. it sounds like he may have a foreign object stuck in his GI tract. Rock can be stuck in the stomach or intestines, which is a bit more serious. They can also move around so sometimes he will feel fine, and other will be sick depending on the migration of the object. I suggest bringing him to the vet to have an x ray of his abdomen taken. They will be able to tell if there are rocks stuck in there or some other object. The longer you wait, the more damage the rocks will do to his GI tract. I suggest going as soon as you can. it is not an emergency right now, but I would make an appointment in the next two days. Good luck, i hope this helps!
