My dog ate Rolaids. What should I do if he's not vomiting yet?

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about Sissy's little dietary indiscretion. Luckily, rolaids are not dangerous to dogs, though they have been known to cause GI upset if more than a couple are eaten. I'm glad to hear that she is drinking water, as my main concern with continued diarrhea is dehydration. If Sissy is lethargic or vomits any more, she should see a vet. If she's acting normal other than seeming like she has an upset stomach, I suggest withholding food for a while (4-6 hours), then try feeding her small meals of boiled chicken and rice. This will help dry up any remaining loose stool, which sounds like it's on the way out, anyway. There isn't much else that you can safely give her at home other than bland food. You might try giving her a piece of bread or a few unsalted crackers, as that yellow liquid you mentioned sounds like bile (usually comes up when the stomach is empty). Any continued symptoms should be evaluated by a vet, but Sissy will in all likelihood recover just fine. Good luck, and I hope Sissy feels better soon!

The amount ingested calculates out to about 1600mg/kg. This is a potentially toxic dose. Ideally, Cooper should be examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. Either can induce vomiting via injection since the ingestion occurred less than 2 hours ago. Activated charcoal may be given afterwards to further reduce absorption. Excess magnesium may cause gastrointestinal upset, depression or negative cardiac or nervous system effects. You can also contact the Pet Poison Helpline. There will be a fee for the call. 1. Give ONE dose of famotidine (Pepcid) by mouth. They usually come in 10mg tablets. Give 1/2 tablet. 2. Wait 30 minutes and then feed one piece of bread. 3. No more food for at least 6 hours. Have water available at all times. If no more vomiting after 6 hours then go back to feeding as normal. The diarrhea should resolve on it's own in a day or so. If not, you can start him on a probiotic. One made for dogs; no human products. You can buy them at any large pet store like Petco. If the vomiting persists at any time he should see a vet ASAP.

There is nothing else you need to do except feed him only boiled rice and chicken for the next day or two if you can, as the wrapper may have irritated his esophagus/stomach going down and a bland diet is always recommended when there is Gastrointestinal irritation to help the GI mucosal lining heal. It’s great that he vomited up the wrapper as it is no longer a risk for an obstruction in his intestines. Just monitor for normal eating, drinking and activity level but call your veterinarian if he continues to vomit, especially within 1/2 hr after eating, doesn’t pass normal stool within 2 days while on only boiled rice and chicken, strains to defecate, or has diarrhea. This is not a toxic dose for a 15 pound dog. That being said, it could still upset his stomach. He could show signs anytime in the next 48 hours. If he starts to seem sick you should take him to your vet ASAP. I suggest you feed him 1/2 a piece of bread that will help coat the tablet and pull it through his GI tract. No other food for 6 hours. Oh no, how naughty of Bentley! While not overly common, it has been shown that overdoses of joint supplements can lead to liver damage. Unfortunately, there is not much information known about the specific dose of glucosamine that can lead to this liver insult. For this reason, I do recommend taking Bentley to an emergency vet fairly urgently. They will be able to check his current blood chemistry to check his liver values and will likely recommend hospitalization for monitoring, IV fluids, and liver support medications. This may not be enough to cause any problems, and I would just keep an eye on them. Rest them, avoid taking them for a walk, and don't give them any more food until the morning.
