My dog chewed stained wood, now vomiting and has diarrhea. What to do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor ice! That is the higher end of the dose for Pepcid and shouldn't harm her. Pepcid is just an acid reducer and may help with the vomiting/nausea. Ice likely has gastro-intestinal upset from eating cat food. A lot of dogs can develop vomiting and diarrhea from eating cat food, especially if they have a sensitive stomach. Ice appears to not be able to tolerate sudden food changes. I recommend fasting Ice for 12-24 hours. With hold water for 6 hours from the last vomiting. If there is no vomiting for 6 hours offer small amounts of water and ice chips. If she holds that down and doesn't vomit start feeding her a bland diet after the 12-24 hour fast. Feed boiled chicken or hamburger, about 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If she continues to vomit while fasted or when water or food is introduced then she should see your Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Ice a speedy recovery!

The dosage for Pepto in dogs is one teaspoon per ten pounds, so 1.5 teaspoons would work. I recommend getting a crate and putting him in it when no one is home to prevent him from getting into the trash when left supervised. Alternatively, you can shut him in a bathroom or other small room, just be sure there isn't anything in there he can reach and eat.

Keep an eye on Dobby. As long as he's keeping his food down, keep feeding him and offering him plenty of water. Give him half a slice of whole wheat bread with each meal. This may form a ball of ingesta around the bones, and cushion them as they pass through the GI tract. If he continues vomiting, there is blood in his vomit or feces, he becomes lethargic, and/or he stops eating, he needs to see a vet immediately. In that case, find an ER vet or a vet on call. Vomiting is one of the most concerning symptoms a pet can have. It is a very non-specific symptom and can be a sign of almost any illness. I suggest you fast him for 8 hours. You can give one tablet of 10mg famotidine (Pepcid) now. After 8 hours there is no more vomiting you can start back feeding him his normal diet - 1/2 ration for about 2 feedings. And if still not vomiting you can then go back to normal. You can certainly start a probiotic gel like Ben-Bac even while he is fasting. If you got a puppy and Buskin is eating the puppy's stool - he may have gotten intestinal parasites from that.

Hello, I am sorry for your concerns for Mochi. We often recommend pumpkin to add more bulk or fiber to the diet, so I do not think it will help much in this case. You can try giving her some famotidine ( Pepcid ), 5 mg every 12 hours for a few days to see if this does not settle things down. Keep her on the bland diet of boiled chicken & white rice ( 25% chicken, 75% rice ), or a little low fat cottage cheese for a few more days, as well. Feed small, but frequent meals. Adding a probiotic cannot hurt. I like Proviable or Forti Flora. If she does not straighten out in a short time, or she starts vomiting, please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. Thank you.

Withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. If the vomiting stops, transition slowly to the regular diet. If not or if she develops other symptoms (diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, etc.), see your veterinarian.

If she did not eat the plastic baggie then she should probably be fine. Her symptoms should be self-limiting (meaning they should resolve on their own in 24-36 hours). If she actually ingested the baggie then I would be a bit concerned that it is causing an obstruction. If she ate the baggie, I think a vet visit is in order. The diarrhea is not as concerning as the vomiting. I would recommend you hold her off food for 8 hours to give her GI tract a rest. If after 8 hours there is no more vomiting, then you can start feeding her. Small feedings of her regular diet every few hours for a couple days. You can also add in probiotic (one made for dogs, not humans). You can pick up a probiotic at your local Petco or any large pet store. Other than the probiotic do not give any medications.
