My dog ate a Halls cough drop and threw up the wrapper. What now?

You may see some GI upset (vomiting and/or diarrhea). Patriot should be able to pass the small wrappers in the next 24-48 hours. Monitor for vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. See your vet if necessary. You may want to feed a bland diet (boiled boneless/skinless chicken breast and plain white rice) for a few days.

That's a lot of sugar for a dog to eat! The good news is that tootsie rolls do not contain much chocolate, and depending on the type of sandwich cookies Molly ate, she may not have eaten enough chocolate to cause a problem with toxicity. Given that she was vomiting, I will give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps her. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Well that was naughty of him. Since there is no toxicity concern and this is a rather small item that has a good chance of passing I would not recommend inducing vomiting. Every time we induce vomiting we do put the pet at risk of aspiration. I would continue to monitor him for signs of any trouble which includes vomiting up food and water, lack of appetite, and lethargy. However if the wrapping was small as I presume for a muffin, he will likely pass this with no issues. If he does have an upset stomach but not signs of blockage as mentioned above, then a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese can be fed for a few days along with 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) To help settle his stomach. No they should pass ok. I would feed them so the wrappers get through the intestinal tract with the food. If they start vomiting or won't eat or do not pass stool the I would take them right in for an exam and X-rays. As long as they are acting normally it's fine to watch them and wait. If this happened recently, ie within the past 2 hours or so, you should take him to a vet for inducing vomiting. If this has been longer then you need to watch your dog for a tummy ache, diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, as he could get pancreatitis from the food he is not used to. Also the wrappers could cause trouble. Watch his feces, wrappers should show up as they pass through the intestinal canal. If he shows any signs of discomfort, please take him to a veterinarian or Pet ER.

One of those cough drops in a 15 lb dog is likely not an issue. The symptoms to look for if it were an issue would be GI upset (vomiting and diarrhea). The important thing is to make sure that they are not sugar free as xylitol is toxic to dogs. These do not seem to be sugar free from the label. . If you notice any lethargy, inappetance, vomiting or diarrhea, bring your dog to your vet for fluids, anti nausea medication, anti-diarrheal medication etc. as indicated. There will likely will be no symptoms. Inducing vomiting for one menthol cough drop would not be worth the risk of aspiration. Offer plenty of water in the meantime and put the rest of the cough drops in a safe place! Good luck!

I'm sorry that Yeezy ate cough drops! In looking up the ingredients for this product, I see it contains menthol 9.1 mg eucalyptus oil, beta carotene, flavors, glucose syrup, honey, soy lecithin, sucralose, sucrose, and water. These ingredients may cause GI upset, but the biggest concern I had about the cough drops were if they had xylitol in them. That's because xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs, and if the cough drops had them, Yeezy would need to see an emergency vet right away. Because these do not have them, he should be ok, but you may see some stomach upset in the form of vomiting and diarrhea. Should you see that, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days.
