My puppy ate a calcium and vitamin D3 pill. What should I do?

Since she only ate 1 pill, I would not be worried about toxicity. The doses in the vitamins for each of the components should not be harmful. You may see some GI signs such as poor appetite, vomiting or diarrhea, but should resolve. If symptoms continue, I would recommend taking her to your veterinarian.

It would help to know what specific kind of tablets they were, how much calcium each one contains and how many she ate, as well as how much your dog weighs to give a more specific answer. But in general, I can tell you that a one-time overdose of calcium tablets like Tums or calcium-containing vitamins is usually not a major problem - calcium in this form is poorly absorbed from the GI tract, so most dogs have to eat a truly massive amount of cause any toxicity issues. You may see some mild GI upset, but other problems are probably unlikely. But if you have any concerns, the safest bet is always to have your dog seen by a vet - if she ate them within the past couple of hours, the vet can induce vomiting to help make sure there won't be any problems.

Hi there! As long as Buddy only ate one tablet, this dose would not be expected to cause any problems. The toxic dose of vitamin D3 in dogs is 100 mcg/kg or above. 5000 IU = 125 mcg, and Buddy weighs about 9 kg, which means he got a total dose of about 14 mcg/kg. This is well below the reported toxic dose, so it's very unlikely that this will be an issue :)

I would recommend making the dog vomit. You can try hydrogen peroxide at home or take him to a vet for them to induce vomiting. Usually dogs will vomit if they ingested the pills in the last hour or two. Fultium is a vit D supplement. My concerns is that it might decrease the Calcium released by the body and interfere with the hyperparathyroid gland. If you cannot get her to vomit I would recommend taking her to a vet. It is very important to monitor her for eating,drinking, defecating and seizure activity. IF at any time she is acting abnormal or not herself I would highly recommend taking her to a vet.

Hi and thanks for your post. Vitamin D3 is the more concerning item over the calcium. Vitamin D3 ingestion would cause a problem at 0.5-3mg/kg of body weight. He is 4kg and 800 IU is 0.02mg therefore 0.02/4kg=0.005mg/kg dosage which is below the 0.5mg/kg cut off and is likely not enough to cause a problem. I would watch him today and tomorrow and take him into your veterinarian if any signs of illness are noted: lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, drinking a lot of water, not urinating or urinating more frequently. However if you are still concerned and it has been less than 2 hours since ingestion, you may take her into an emergency veterinarian to induce emissions (vomiting) and have her assessed. He should be okay. Monitor him for vomiting, not eating or drinking, diarrhea, or abnormal behavior. You can feed him a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice just to be safe. If he is acting off take him to the veterinarian.

The dose of D3 ingested, 0.0125mg, will likely not pose a risk of serious toxicity. The dose of calcium is within published therapeutic ranges and should not cause a toxicity either. You can monitor for lethargy, increased thirst or urination and GI upset at home. Symptoms typically occur between 12 and 36 hours after ingestion. See your veterinarian if necessary.
