My dog ate a poppy seed muffin. Is it safe? What should I do?

I would not be concerned if Dani only ate one bite of a lemon poppyseed muffin. Please monitor GI upset like vomiting and diarrhea and if these occur you may offer a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice. If vomiting or diarrhea does occur and is severe you may need to have Dani examined to see if medication is needed. Again, I think it's highly unlikely Dani will become sick but do suggest monitoring her for the next day or so to ensure she doesn't get mild stomach upset. Yes, as she only ate one she'll be fine. She would need to eat much more to make her sick. Please try to keep human food away from Bella as it can give her an upset stomach or diarrhea. Chocolate is the worst toxicity as dogs love chocolate, but grapes or raisins can cause kidney failure so please be careful with those things also. The ASPCA Poison Control does not show any evidence that poppy seeds are toxic to dogs. Sophia could have developed some upset stomach from eating this muffin, but given that 24 hours have passed without a sign, she should be ok. As for the bright pink in her stool, it's possible that ingredients in the muffin caused this color change, but it could also be blood. Keep an eye on her stool, and if you keep seeing this color in Sophia's stool, then I would have her seen by a vet.

Well that was naughty of him. Since there is no toxicity concern and this is a rather small item that has a good chance of passing I would not recommend inducing vomiting. Every time we induce vomiting we do put the pet at risk of aspiration. I would continue to monitor him for signs of any trouble which includes vomiting up food and water, lack of appetite, and lethargy. However if the wrapping was small as I presume for a muffin, he will likely pass this with no issues. If he does have an upset stomach but not signs of blockage as mentioned above, then a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese can be fed for a few days along with 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) To help settle his stomach. Hi there. There should not be enough actual cocoa in half of a chocolate muffin to cause any significant toxicity issues in a dog this size, so it's unlikely that you'll see any problems. Zion may have some minor stomach upset if he isn't used to eating human food like this, but otherwise should be just fine.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs, but the cocoa content in a muffin will be relatively small. The big danger to dogs is eating really dark chocolate. If you are close to a vet you could take him to be made sick to be super safe, however this needs to be done within an hour. Bullet should be fine though. You may find he has a bit of an upset tummy though. Keep him drinking and if he becomes very sick head to the vet.

There are 2 concerns with papaya seeds. The first is that they contain very small amounts of cyanide. The amount is very small, so even a small dog would have to eat a large amount of seeds to have any problem with that. The second concern is the possibility of an intestinal blockage if they are not able to pass the seeds. This is certainly a concern in a small dog, so monitor Mondy closely for any vomiting, lethargy or inappetance and have him examined immediately if you notice any of those signs. Good luck!
