My dog ate a chocolate muffin. Is it toxic? What should I do?

My dog had recently eaten a muffin that contain chocolate. I don't know how much he ate, but should I be worried. Someone please help.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs, but the cocoa content in a muffin will be relatively small. The big danger to dogs is eating really dark chocolate. If you are close to a vet you could take him to be made sick to be super safe, however this needs to be done within an hour.
Bullet should be fine though. You may find he has a bit of an upset tummy though. Keep him drinking and if he becomes very sick head to the vet.

Pearl is so cute! Thank you for including a picture of the muffin so I can see what kind it is. I would keep an eye on her for now. Chocolate toxicity can take up to 24 hours for toxic symptoms to appear, and while this muffin may not have had enough chocolate to cause the symptoms it's best to monitor her to be safe. If you see any signs of toxicity which including vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate, and increased urination, then I would be concerned and have her seen by a vet. Otherwise, she should be ok :-)

After finding the ingredients list, and although the exact amount of chocolate is not written there, I am pretty confident that it would not be enough to cause toxicity, however you should expect vomiting, diarrhea and possibly reduce of appetite today. If any other symptoms occur - take chlorine to the vet.

In most cases the amount of actual chocolate in a baked good such as a muffin is not large so usually this will not cause an issue, but it is best to monitor him for the next few hours just to be safe. Chocolate toxicity can take from four to 24 hours to show symptoms. Without knowing the type of chocolate in the cupcake, I can't say for certain if she will be ok or not. If it was made with cocoa, I would be extremely concerned as it is the most toxic type of chocolate. Because I don't know the type of chocolate in the cupcake, the best thing to do is to take Maggy into a vet immediately for decontamination procedures to prevent chocolate toxicity from occurring.

You need to take Ziva into the vet immediately, this is a medical emergency. It sounds like she is suffering from chocolate toxicity, and if the muffins were made with cocoa powder, that is very serious as it's the most poisonous type of chocolate to dogs. She needs veterinary attention now, please bring her into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her ASAP.

Oh no, that was naughty of Junior! Cocoa is toxic to dogs, but it depends on how much was in the donut as to whether or not it leads to toxic symptoms. In looking up the ingredients, I see that it contains less than 2% of cocoa, so the amount in this little donut is not likely to cause toxic symptoms. Junior should be ok, but keep an eye on him for now. To be safe, you can take him into a vet to safely induce vomiting. I don't recommend inducing vomiting at home. That's because hydrogen peroxide (which is used at home to induce vomiting) can and does cause severe esophagitis and gastritis, often worse than the initial problem, so it's always preferred to advise emergency care. Take him into a vet now to induce vomiting.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Milk chocolate is less toxic than dark chocolate and it is dose - dependent. In smaller doses it my just cause vomiting and diarrhea. In larger doses it can cause neurological signs and even death. So if he ate a large amount, I would take him to the veterinarian so they can induce vomiting and get it out if his system.

What should I do if my dog ate chocolate brownies and seems fine?

It's difficult to know how much the actual cocoa content is in this, but brownies tend to be more concentrated with cocoa powder, which is concerning for chocolate toxicity. It also depends on the size of the brownies. In order for you to determine the potential for toxicity, I recommend you estimate the amount of cocoa powder potentially ingested and use the chocolate toxicity calculator at this link: http://veterinaryclinic.com/chocolate/calc.html Signs of chocolate toxicity can be vomiting, hyper-excitability, tremors and seizures. If you notice any of these signs, then it's best to take her to a vet for treatment/monitoring as soon as possible. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done at home for this. It's best to make sure she has plenty of water and that you check her every four hours for any signs of toxicity. If she is better within 12 hours, then I would not worry about any signs of toxicity. My dog ate a muffin liner. Is it safe? Should I make him throw up?

Well that was naughty of him. Since there is no toxicity concern and this is a rather small item that has a good chance of passing I would not recommend inducing vomiting. Every time we induce vomiting we do put the pet at risk of aspiration. I would continue to monitor him for signs of any trouble which includes vomiting up food and water, lack of appetite, and lethargy. However if the wrapping was small as I presume for a muffin, he will likely pass this with no issues. If he does have an upset stomach but not signs of blockage as mentioned above, then a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese can be fed for a few days along with 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) To help settle his stomach.
