My dog ate chicken & rice with onion/garlic powder & wine. Is it toxic?

This may result though in gastrointestinal upset. Watch your pup for symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, inappetence and/or diarrhea. You're correct in that both onions and garlic are toxic to dogs, but I wouldn't worry at all about the negligible amount that your dog is getting. At 50 pounds, she would need to eat about 4 teaspoons of onion powder in order to experience the blood cell changes associated with onion toxicosis. I can't imagine that that much onion powder would be in a quart or so of the broth, let alone 1/4 cup. With that said, I generally err on the side of caution and prefer avoiding feeding both onions and garlic whenever possible. Generally, dogs need to consume at least 5% of their body weight to develop onion toxicosis. This means that Bambi will have needed to consume about 50g of onion powder to show clinical signs off illness. If you think she may have consumed this amount or if you have concerns, you should take her to an emergency veterinarian.

If it was only seasoned with garlic powder it likely won't cause any problems, however the other seasoning ingredients could cause some minor digestive upset such as vomiting or diarrhea. Uncooked rice itself may also cause bloating if a lot was eaten. You can feed a bland diet of boiled rice and chicken if your dog only ate a little and has minor GI upset, however if you see persistent vomiting or diarrhea, blood in the vomit or diarrhea, a bloated or painful abdomen, or your pup seems in severe distress, seeking veterinary care ASAP is best.

Onion toxicosis is consistently noted in animals that ingest more than 0.5% of their body weight in onions at one time. Garlic is 5 times more powerful than the onion. Considering the fact that the quantity is unknown I think the best course of action would be to take Taquito to your veterinarian to make him sick and give medication to reduce absorption of the toxics. Dixie will probably be just fine. It takes quite a bit of onion and garlic to cause clinical signs of toxicity - for a 40 lb dog the toxic dose would be 20 grams of onion or 5 grams of garlic. Both onion and garlic cause destruction of red blood cells leading to anemia. Onion and garlic powder can be more concentrated than the raw vegetables and therefore more likely to cause a problem, but I doubt there would be enough of either in a tuna sandwich. We also tend to see more problems when small amounts are given frequently rather than a single one time exposure.
