My small dog ate onion and garlic powder. What should I do now?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | 6 years and 1 month old | 6.7 lbs

My dog has just ate a small chicken slider, which I've just found contains onion and garlic powder. He is a dashound jackrussel mix, and about 6 and a half pounds. I don't know how much onion and garlic was in the product, but I know he ate about half of it.

Onion toxicosis is consistently noted in animals that ingest more than 0.5% of their body weight in onions at one time. Garlic is 5 times more powerful than the onion.
Considering the fact that the quantity is unknown I think the best course of action would be to take Taquito to your veterinarian to make him sick and give medication to reduce absorption of the toxics.

This may result though in gastrointestinal upset. Watch your pup for symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, inappetence and/or diarrhea. Hello, onion toxicity can cause anemia in both pets and humans. They need to consume a large amount of onion to have evidence of anemia. More likely, pets may develop GI signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, and a decreased appetite. The amount of onion powder in the sauce is likely not enough to cause any severe side effects to Par. You can be more certain about this by calling the Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 and giving them the information about the ingredients and the quantity Par ingested. My dog ate a tiny piece of onion. Is it toxic? What should I do?

The dose of onion in dogs that is toxic is about 0.5 grams per kilogram of body weight. For a 10 pound dog, that would be about 20 grams of onion. There are about 5 grams in each teaspoon, so Marlin would have to eat over 4 tsp of onions in order to be concerned about toxicity. The biggest concern comes with dehydrated onions which are much more concentrated than fresh onions. It sounds like Marlin will be fine, but please contact your veterinarian if you have any concerns. 1/2 of a tsp of garlic powder or 2 whole garlic cloves would potentially be toxic if ingested, so if you think that it is possible that the spaghetti had that amount in the bowl you should see an emergency veterinarian. Otherwise there is no concern. Garlic and garlic powder tend to be more toxic if ingested consistently over a long period of time; it generally takes a lot to cause toxicity if it is a one time ingestion.
