My large dog ate some gravy with onion powder. Will he be okay?

This may result though in gastrointestinal upset. Watch your pup for symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, inappetence and/or diarrhea. Sadie would have to eat more than a half of a large onion (or a whole normal size onion) to get into any trouble. She may show mild signs of stomach upset, like a bout of vomit or loose stools but there should not be any more concerning symptoms.

Good question! Onions in larger quantities are toxic to dogs but Milo should be fine with that amount. You're correct in that both onions and garlic are toxic to dogs, but I wouldn't worry at all about the negligible amount that your dog is getting. At 50 pounds, she would need to eat about 4 teaspoons of onion powder in order to experience the blood cell changes associated with onion toxicosis. I can't imagine that that much onion powder would be in a quart or so of the broth, let alone 1/4 cup. With that said, I generally err on the side of caution and prefer avoiding feeding both onions and garlic whenever possible. No, she will not die. These kind of powders contain small quantity of onion and garlic, usually way below toxic dose for dogs. So, your Xena may develop mild gastroenteritis (maybe a vomit and/or loose stools) but otherwise she will not get into any serious problems.
