My dog ate two raisins. Should I be worried about potential poisoning?

This is the smallest amount of raisin consumption ever documented that caused acute damage to the kidneys. Raisins 0.11 oz/kg Ziggy is 6 lbs or 2.7 kg. 2.7 kg x .11 ozs = 0.3 ounces of raisins for his body weight.

However, SMALLER amounts could also cause problems - we really don't know exactly what the minimum dose is.

Also, not every dog or cat is susceptible - many animals can tolerate large quantities of grapes or raisins without problems. Nobody knows what the patient risk factors are (other than ingestion).

So to be safe, I would contact the above resources. Good luck

A few raisins in a 60-pound dog is probably or no consequence, but some dogs can react to just one. Personally, I would just watch Buddy. Most problems will develop in 6-24 hours, & consist of vomiting &/or diarrhea. If any of these should develop, get to your vet immediately. No vomiting or diarrhea by 48 hours, then he will be fine. My dog ate raisins, didn't vomit after peroxide. Should I be worried?

Toxicity from raisin ingestion is around 0.11 oz/kg of raisins. And most raisins weigh around 0.5g, making a toxic amount around 6 raisings per kg of body weight in a dog. Dolly's weight is 1.7kg. However, this is just an average. To be absolutely sure and safe, I would still consider having both pets evaluated by your local ER vet and induce vomiting if possible. Hydrogen peroxide is only one way to induce vomiting in dogs. The medicine your vet carries is more effective at inducing vomiting, but this can only be done 1-2 hrs after ingesting a toxin. However, we don't know the exact mechanism of toxicity in grapes and raisins, so I cannot give you a 100% guarantee that there's no danger. My 11kg dog ate 2 Galaxy Minstrels. Will he be okay after eating chocolate?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! How likely Ziggy is to be affected by this depends on how much chocolate he ingested relative to his weight. If it the typical size of galaxy minstrels made how they are typically made, then it is likely that Ziggy will be fine. It really comes down to how much was ingested. Some of the clinical signs that can be noted include gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting and diarrhea all the way down to even neurologic signs such as tremors and seizures and cardiac arrhythmias in severe cases. I recommend that you have Ziggy evaluated by your veterinarian if you think that the amount he ate is too much based on the galaxy minstrels being bigger than typical or for example being made of dark chocolate. At the very least, his vitals can be checked to ensure they are normal. I really hope that everything goes well! Good luck!

My dog is vomiting and shaking. Could it be from a raisin he ate?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It would be extremely unlikely that the vomiting on Friday is related to raisin ingestion on Monday. It was a very small amount of raisins that Bubba ate. Typically symptoms of raisins intoxication are seen within 2-3 days after ingestion. I suspect Bubba could be vomiting because of upset stomach, gastroenteritis, infection or dietary indiscretion. Shaking is probably also related to vomiting and nausea. You should follow your vet recommendations, offer Bubba small amounts of bland food every few hours and make sure he is drinking water. Typical stomach upset should resolve within 2-3 days.

To my knowledge raisins have to be ingested to have any concerns. However, it has only been in the last 12 years that we have known raisins are problematic to some dogs, and there is still information we don’t know about the toxicity and why some dogs are affected and others aren’t. My dog ate raisins! Is hydrogen peroxide safe to induce vomiting?

The milk may cause some GI upset, but the raisins are a problem. There is no known safe amount of raisins for dogs to eat. There is always a possibility of kidney failure. The (major) problem with treating these guys is that you don't know if it's going to cause kidney failure until it's too late. They don't act different or ill until they are life threateningly ill. The only way to treat them is to go to the clinic, make Sora vomit if it was within an hour or maybe 2, then keep her on IV fluids for a day or two. And some dogs can eat raisins without any problems. We just don't know how each individual will react. So I know that's not the most helpful answer, but that's the more accurate one we have. You can chance it and do nothing and there is a good chance everything will be fine, or you can take her to the clinic immediately for hospitalization. Good luck!
