My dog ate a naproxen tablet. What should I do if she seems fine?

Most cases of toxicosis occur in dogs that are repeatedly given Naproxen. I did find in an article online (the link is below if you want to read the entire article) that "The APCC data suggest that a one-time dose of 7 mg/kg or greater can cause clinical signs of GI irritation and ulceration (vomiting, diarrhea, melena, anorexia), whereas azotemia (elevation of kidney levels) is possible at doses ranging from 13 to 15 mg/kg." Based on your dogs weight of 44 pounds, if he ate one 250 mg tablet then the dose would have been 12.5 mg/kg. The best thing would be to have your vet check kidney values 24-48 hours after the ingestion to make sure all values are normal. Hello. Cora consumed the equivalent of 9.7 mg/kg of naproxin. We begin to see GI signs like vomiting & diarrhea, possibly with blood at 7 mg/kg & kidney damage at 13 mg/kg. Since there are other factors that may impact how badly Cora may react to the medication, including any preexisting conditions, dehydration, etc., I think it would be prudent to take Cora to an emergency clinic for decontamination & any possible treatment. Considering that Naproxen has a very narrow safety margin and a maximum dose of 2mg/kg is described in literature, your dog would have received a seven-fold dose, ie 500mg /35kg = 14 mg/kg, thus making it likely that he may develop some stomach and kidney trouble. I would recommend that you call ASPCA's poison control number. That number is 888-426-4435. There is a $65 charge, but they will be able to best advise you. Hello. There is very little information on this product in veterinary medicine but based on information on similarly classed drugs, there should be little if any problems & is generally considered to be well tolerated. According to Plumb's Veterinary Formulary, Esomeprazole could potentially cause GI distress ( anorexia, colic, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea & C. diff. infections ) as well as rare hematologic & neurologic disturbances & urinary tract infections . Information on acute toxicity is also limited in veterinary medicine, but the LD50, or amount of this drug needed to kill 50% of rats administered this medication is greater than 4000mg per kg. Nugget consumed the equivalent of 7 mg per kg. So, I would just keep a good watch on Nugget. If she shows any GI signs, they should resolve on their own. If nothing is seen in the next 24 hours, you can stop worrying, but this one pill does not warrant any medical attention at this time. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Aleve (naproxen) is definitely concerning and has a small margin of safety in dogs. One of the most common problems it causes is gastrointestinal damage - this would explain the vomiting and diarrhea. However, she can also have kidney and/or liver damage with this drug. Considering she is showing signs of toxicity today, it's best to take her to the vet for an evaluation and treatment. There are good treatment options for these cases that will keep Lilita from getting any worse. It's good that she still seems in good spirits, but it's definitely possible that she can get worse over the next couple of days. For this reason, it's best to take her to a vet as soon as possible. The big problem with an overdose of meloxicam (or any other NSAID) is that it can definitively result in side effects such as gastrointestinal ulceration (which may manifest as black, tarry stools which basically means digested blood), kidney disease, liver disease and gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia. I advice that you take Katie to a veterinarian (perhaps a bit farther from you) for evaluation and further treatment. If it has been less than 2 hours, vomiting could still be induced which could make the outcome better. If there is no way possible you can do that then take her first thing in the morning tomorrow. Hello. Ingesting ibuprofen over 25 mg/kg can cause significant gastrointestinal signs. Sable ingested the equivalent of 33mg/kg, so she could have some issues. See hoe she is in the morning, & try to have her seen. She may just be placed on a stomach protectant for a few days just to make sure she stays well.
