My dog ate ibuprofen late at night. Can I wait until morning for vet?

While this would be within the therapeutic index and it is supposed to be safe, this medication is not commonly used for pain control in dogs as it is not well-studied. Ibuprofen intoxication can cause stomach upset, ulceration in the stomach and, if ingested in larger amounts, problems with kidneys. Typically, the symptoms occur within 24-48hrs from ibuprofen ingestion, so if you dog ate the pill 5 days ago, most likely everything is fine. As long as she is not having any gastrointestinal signs at present (no vomiting, no blood in stools, good appetite) and she is passing urine as normal, most likely there is nothing to worry about.

Hello. You do not say what strength the ibuprofen was, but a 50 pound dog can take about 225 mg every 12-24 hours. Toxicity may be seen if your dog ingested around 568 mg. If the tablet was 400 mg or less, Zeke will be fine, but if this was a 600mg tablet or more, you should contact your veterinarian. The most common signs of ibuprofen toxicity at this dose include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased energy, and loss of appetite. Stomach ulcers can occur, causing abdominal pain and blood in the stool. Treatment can involve several different options. Depending on how long ago Jellybean ingested the ibuprofen, your veterinarian may recommend inducing him to vomit. This will not be effective though if the ingestion was too long ago. The administration of activated charcoal can decrease the amount of of ibuprofen absorbed into the blood stream. Most dogs are also hospitalized for fluids to help protect the kidneys from damage as well. I recommend that Jellybean is examined by his veterinarian as soon as possible. Definitely call your veterinarian as well to discuss his particular situation. Overall, overdose and toxicity situations are best treated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Hi there. We can see serious GI side effects, including stomach ulcers and internal bleeding, at ibuprofen doses over 50 mg/kg. If Dubs is 35 pounds and may have ingested 1200 mg of ibuprofen, this would be about 75 mg/kg - so yes, he would be at risk of developing some serious problems. I would recommend taking him to the vet today for an exam. The veterinarian may recommend checking some lab work to see if there is any evidence of bleeding in his stomach, and will probably prescribe medication to help protect his stomach lining for the next few days until the ibuprofen is out of his system.

Since you managed to go take her to a vet right away and he she had the proper treatment there is a good chance that she will be ok. You will find out next week when you take her to your own vet for some blood tests checking her kidneys and liver. If those are normal then she did not get damaged by the Ibuprofen.
