What if my dog ate human Meloxicam and vets are closed?

As long as the smaller dog doesn't have any pre-existing liver or kidney issues, its unlikely that this will be a problem. Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, or decreased appetite, or lethargy; if you notice any of these symptoms, take him to the vet for an exam and bloodwork. Again, though, based on what you are describing, as long as Bean is otherwise healthy, I think its extremely unlikely that this will cause any issues. Yes, it's certainly possible that the meloxicam could have caused these symptoms if J ate one of your tablets off the floor - this drug can be used safely in dogs, but 7.5 mg in a 17-18 kg dog is far too much. Overdoses of meloxicam can cause severe stomach ulcers, internal bleeding, and even perforation of the stomach or intestines as well as kidney damage in some cases. If J is still having problems, I would definitely recommend letting your vet know that this is a possibility - he should have blood work to check his kidney function, as well as fluids, anti-nausea medication, and stomach protectants. Most dogs can recover from a one-time meloxicam overdose like this with supportive care, so it's not necessarily a reason to panic - just let you vet know that this might be the problem, to make sure that J is being treated appropriately.

Hi, I see you've posted again...you have confirmed that this is a massive overdose of meloxicam for a dog that size and it would definitely cause her to be lethargic. Overdoses are most concerning for causing stomach and/or intestinal ulcers/bleeding. It can also cause significant damage to the kidneys. For these reasons, I recommend you take Polly to the vet immediately. There are medications and treatments that can keep this from getting worse and it's imperative that they are given soon. However, it's worth double-checking the syringe. Liquid meloxicam is usually given with a small 1ml syringe. The 1ml may be written as 1.0ml, which could be confused with 10. Hello. Ingesting ibuprofen over 25 mg/kg can cause significant gastrointestinal signs. Sable ingested the equivalent of 33mg/kg, so she could have some issues. See hoe she is in the morning, & try to have her seen. She may just be placed on a stomach protectant for a few days just to make sure she stays well. The most common signs of ibuprofen toxicity at this dose include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased energy, and loss of appetite. Stomach ulcers can occur, causing abdominal pain and blood in the stool. Treatment can involve several different options. Depending on how long ago Jellybean ingested the ibuprofen, your veterinarian may recommend inducing him to vomit. This will not be effective though if the ingestion was too long ago. The administration of activated charcoal can decrease the amount of of ibuprofen absorbed into the blood stream. Most dogs are also hospitalized for fluids to help protect the kidneys from damage as well. I recommend that Jellybean is examined by his veterinarian as soon as possible. Definitely call your veterinarian as well to discuss his particular situation. Overall, overdose and toxicity situations are best treated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A 250mg tablet is over 5mg/kg which is close to the gastro-intestinal signs and ulceration. It is probably too late to induce vomiting but that would have been ideal to do right after she ate. It is best to have her seen by your Vet to start gastro-intestinal protectants like omeprazole, sucralfate and misoprostal to protect her GI tract from ulceration just to be safe. Oh dear! This is a pretty significant overdose, and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like Previcox have a fairly narrow margin of safety in dogs. Overdoses like this can result in severe stomach ulcers, internal bleeding, or even kidney failure. Since she got such a large dose, I would really recommend taking her to the vet right away for treatment. He/she can give her an injection to induce vomiting to help get any remaining pills out of her stomach before they can be absorbed, and may also recommend giving her IV fluids and starting medication to help protect her stomach to try and prevent any problems.
