My dog ate Nexium. Does my mini Dachshund need immediate vet care?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Female | spayed | 2 years old | 13 lbs

My 13 pound mini Dachshund found a 40mg nexium on the floor and ate the medicine out of the capsule. Please let me know if we need to seek immediate vetiranary attention.

Hello. There is very little information on this product in veterinary medicine but based on information on similarly classed drugs, there should be little if any problems & is generally considered to be well tolerated. According to Plumb's Veterinary Formulary, Esomeprazole could potentially cause GI distress ( anorexia, colic, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea & C. diff. infections ) as well as rare hematologic & neurologic disturbances & urinary tract infections . Information on acute toxicity is also limited in veterinary medicine, but the LD50, or amount of this drug needed to kill 50% of rats administered this medication is greater than 4000mg per kg. Nugget consumed the equivalent of 7 mg per kg. So, I would just keep a good watch on Nugget. If she shows any GI signs, they should resolve on their own. If nothing is seen in the next 24 hours, you can stop worrying, but this one pill does not warrant any medical attention at this time. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

While Dexilant isn't a drug regularly used in veterinary medicine, I found information that states "According to toxicity studies there was no effect from the drug on dogs when given at a dose of 5mg per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of body weight for several days in a row." With his weight of 85 pounds, there will be no issues. Just do not give him anymore. I hope this helps!

My dog ate a naproxen tablet. What should I do if she seems fine?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A 250mg tablet is over 5mg/kg which is close to the gastro-intestinal signs and ulceration. It is probably too late to induce vomiting but that would have been ideal to do right after she ate. It is best to have her seen by your Vet to start gastro-intestinal protectants like omeprazole, sucralfate and misoprostal to protect her GI tract from ulceration just to be safe. My dog ate Naproxen. Should I still worry about kidney failure?

Most cases of toxicosis occur in dogs that are repeatedly given Naproxen. I did find in an article online (the link is below if you want to read the entire article) that "The APCC data suggest that a one-time dose of 7 mg/kg or greater can cause clinical signs of GI irritation and ulceration (vomiting, diarrhea, melena, anorexia), whereas azotemia (elevation of kidney levels) is possible at doses ranging from 13 to 15 mg/kg." Based on your dogs weight of 44 pounds, if he ate one 250 mg tablet then the dose would have been 12.5 mg/kg. The best thing would be to have your vet check kidney values 24-48 hours after the ingestion to make sure all values are normal. My dog ate Aleve. Is it an emergency if my dog ate human pain meds?

Hello. Cora consumed the equivalent of 9.7 mg/kg of naproxin. We begin to see GI signs like vomiting & diarrhea, possibly with blood at 7 mg/kg & kidney damage at 13 mg/kg. Since there are other factors that may impact how badly Cora may react to the medication, including any preexisting conditions, dehydration, etc., I think it would be prudent to take Cora to an emergency clinic for decontamination & any possible treatment. My dog ate montelukast 10mg. Should I worry? What are the next steps?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is not much information about this medication in dogs, but it looks like it has relatively low side effects. You may see some vomiting or diarrhea. If you would like a more definite answer I would call the ASPCA poison control hotline at 888-426-4435 where they have more experience with pets eating human medications.
