My dog ate Aleve, now has vomiting and diarrhea. What should I do?

hello I gave my little dog 2 aleve with benadryl and yesterday she was vomiting and today she had diarrhea. I don't think she feels bad because she is playing with my other dog but i read that aleve could be dangerous and now im scared. should i do something. I gave her the first aleve on friday, i split into to part and did the same with the benadryl and then on saturday i did the same.

Aleve (naproxen) is definitely concerning and has a small margin of safety in dogs. One of the most common problems it causes is gastrointestinal damage - this would explain the vomiting and diarrhea. However, she can also have kidney and/or liver damage with this drug. Considering she is showing signs of toxicity today, it's best to take her to the vet for an evaluation and treatment. There are good treatment options for these cases that will keep Lilita from getting any worse. It's good that she still seems in good spirits, but it's definitely possible that she can get worse over the next couple of days. For this reason, it's best to take her to a vet as soon as possible. I am sorry to hear about your concern for Bandit. Eating one tablet of 220mg of aleve would be a dose of 6.4 mg per kg of body weight in your dog. According to data at the ASPCA, this dose primarily results in GI symptoms such as anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, and sometimes GI bleeding. Treatment may include gastrointestinal protectants to help coat and soothe the GI tract, fluid therapy to help any dehydration due to diarrhea, so these are things your vet may recommend. If your dog is geriatric or has any concern for prior kidney disease then they can be at increased risk for kidney damage and bloodwork may be recommended to monitor for this.

Hello. Cora consumed the equivalent of 9.7 mg/kg of naproxin. We begin to see GI signs like vomiting & diarrhea, possibly with blood at 7 mg/kg & kidney damage at 13 mg/kg. Since there are other factors that may impact how badly Cora may react to the medication, including any preexisting conditions, dehydration, etc., I think it would be prudent to take Cora to an emergency clinic for decontamination & any possible treatment. Roscoe should be taken to the nearest veterinary ER. Vomiting can be induced via injection to get the pill out before it is digested and absorbed. Activated charcoal may be administered afterwards to further reduce absorption. These actions are most successful when done within 2 hours of ingestion. My dog ate Aleve and has black stool. Is this an emergency?

Black stool is indeed concerning, and if Achilles did in fact eat Aleve this would indicate bleeding inside the GI tract. I'm sure your vet advised you to be alert to this complication. Sucralfate can help when there are GI ulcers (this is one of the complications caused by an overdose of NSAIDs) but it may not be all he needs to recover successfully. Often these dogs sustain liver and kidney damage, and need to recover in a hospital with IV fluid therapy. Finally, depending on how much he ingested, he may be at risk for perforation of the stomach, and this is an extremely serious complication that requires surgery. If he is not doing well at this point I would urge you to seek immediate follow-up care.

My dog took Alleve for hip pain. Is it safe? Should I make her vomit?

The only case report of a severe toxic reaction in a dog after a single dose of Alleve involved an elderly dachshund that received 35.7 mg/kg of the drug. your dog received approximately 6.5 mg/kg, fortunately this is not likely to cause any serious toxic reaction, inducing vomiting is not needed in this case but in the future i strongly recommend avoiding this medication altogether as well as any other pain killer from your personal cabinet.

My dog ate Aleve. Is 100mg safe for a 40lb dog? What should I do?

Naproxen is toxic to dogs, however it has been used in exceptional situations at typically 2mg/kg. Your dog weighs 40 lbs, ie 18 kg , so did not ingest a dangerous amount of Naproxen at 100mg. Please make sure to keep all medications locked up so your dog cannot reach and eat them.
