My dog ate Naproxen. Should I still worry about kidney failure?

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 11 years and 6 months old | 44 lbs

Hi, my dog has potentially ate a 250mg tablet of Naproxen. He was made sick at the emergency vets about 1 hour 20mins after exposure. No tablet was found in the sick. He has been prescribed omeprazole and cytotec. I know his stomach will be OK but do I need to worry about renal failure?

Most cases of toxicosis occur in dogs that are repeatedly given Naproxen. I did find in an article online (the link is below if you want to read the entire article) that "The APCC data suggest that a one-time dose of 7 mg/kg or greater can cause clinical signs of GI irritation and ulceration (vomiting, diarrhea, melena, anorexia), whereas azotemia (elevation of kidney levels) is possible at doses ranging from 13 to 15 mg/kg." Based on your dogs weight of 44 pounds, if he ate one 250 mg tablet then the dose would have been 12.5 mg/kg. The best thing would be to have your vet check kidney values 24-48 hours after the ingestion to make sure all values are normal. Hope this information helps!

Renal failure is always a concern if naproxen is ingested. You didn't mention whether or not the vet ran some bloodwork to check Bax's kidneys at the time of the incident. If not, I would recommend you get that done ASAP. Any kidney changes would show up quickly on a blood panel. I would also have a urinalysis done and his blood pressure checked. If all that is normal I think Bax is out of the woods as far as that is concerned.

If the vet did run bloodwork, then I would wait a week and then have it checked again to see if there any changes. The bloodwork results can be compared with each other to detect subtle changes. Sometimes early changes can be picked up with a urinalysis or the blood pressure readings.

Poor Bax! Dont worry too much as the tablet had likely just dissolved in his stomach acid, hopefully a good bit came up in his vomit. He should be fine as he didnt ingest a massive amount anyway. If you are rewlly worried you could wait 1 week then have his bloods done to check his kidney function.

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Bandit. Eating one tablet of 220mg of aleve would be a dose of 6.4 mg per kg of body weight in your dog. According to data at the ASPCA, this dose primarily results in GI symptoms such as anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, and sometimes GI bleeding. Treatment may include gastrointestinal protectants to help coat and soothe the GI tract, fluid therapy to help any dehydration due to diarrhea, so these are things your vet may recommend. If your dog is geriatric or has any concern for prior kidney disease then they can be at increased risk for kidney damage and bloodwork may be recommended to monitor for this.

My dog ate a naproxen tablet. What should I do if she seems fine?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A 250mg tablet is over 5mg/kg which is close to the gastro-intestinal signs and ulceration. It is probably too late to induce vomiting but that would have been ideal to do right after she ate. It is best to have her seen by your Vet to start gastro-intestinal protectants like omeprazole, sucralfate and misoprostal to protect her GI tract from ulceration just to be safe. Naproxen is toxic to dogs, however it has been used in exceptional situations at typically 2mg/kg. Your dog weighs 40 lbs, ie 18 kg , so did not ingest a dangerous amount of Naproxen at 100mg. Please make sure to keep all medications locked up so your dog cannot reach and eat them.

Hello. Cora consumed the equivalent of 9.7 mg/kg of naproxin. We begin to see GI signs like vomiting & diarrhea, possibly with blood at 7 mg/kg & kidney damage at 13 mg/kg. Since there are other factors that may impact how badly Cora may react to the medication, including any preexisting conditions, dehydration, etc., I think it would be prudent to take Cora to an emergency clinic for decontamination & any possible treatment. Aleve (naproxen) is definitely concerning and has a small margin of safety in dogs. One of the most common problems it causes is gastrointestinal damage - this would explain the vomiting and diarrhea. However, she can also have kidney and/or liver damage with this drug. Considering she is showing signs of toxicity today, it's best to take her to the vet for an evaluation and treatment. There are good treatment options for these cases that will keep Lilita from getting any worse.
