My dog ate chocolate pretzels. Is it toxic? Do I need a vet?

Oh no, that's not good that Ginger at the pretzels! If she ate a fourth of a 7oz bag, she consumed probably around 1.75oz. For safety reasons, we will assume the chocolate weights 1.75oz, although in reality it's likely a lot less. At her weight, it would at most cause a mild reaction in that you could see vomiting, diarrhea, elevated heart rate, and shaking. More than likely, she did not consume enough chocolate for you to see any reaction, and she will be fine. If you do see any GI signs, I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. It can take up to 24 hours for signs of chocolate toxicity to show, so I would monitor her for the next day. I hope this helps, best of luck!

Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Milk chocolate is less toxic than dark chocolate and it is dose - dependent. In smaller doses it my just cause vomiting and diarrhea. In larger doses it can cause neurological signs and even death. So if he ate a large amount, I would take him to the veterinarian so they can induce vomiting and get it out if his system.

No worries about this. Even if it was a rather big cookie with big chunks of chocolate, it would not be enough to cause chocolate toxicity in a dog that size. One of the first signs of chocolate toxicity is vomiting and hyperactivity. If you haven't noticed this yet, then there's little chance he will have any signs of toxicity. If he happens to show these signs, then a trip to the vet will be needed for monitoring and medication. As I'm sure you know, Reese's contain chocolate and chocolate is toxic to dogs. At 70lbs of body weight, he can eat about 30 average size peanut butter cups without suffering chocolate intoxication; however he may get gastro-intestinal problems such as diarrhea and pancreatitis. Fatty foods can give dogs pancreatitis, which can be life threatening. The best thing to do is take him into the vet to have vomiting induced to get rid of the peanut cups. If you chose not to do this, you need to watch him for vomiting, diarrhea, vomiting undigested food, lethargy, a loss of appetite, and vomiting water. If you see any of those signs, it's an emergency and he will have to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!

The toxicity depends on how much chocolate Napolean actually ate. Figure out how much chocolate Napolean actually ate. I would recommend to call the Pet Poison Control hotline: 855-764-7661. They can calculate the amount that Napoleon ate and accurately tell you if it is toxic or not. Milk chocolate is generally less toxic which is what it sounds like Napoelon got into. According to the VCA website: Toxic doses of theobromine are reported to be as low as 20 mg/kg, where agitation, hyperactivity and gastrointestinal signs (such as drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea - all which may smell like chocolate) can be seen. Now its just figuring out how much chocolate Napoleon ate. I hope this helps!

It's difficult to know how much the actual cocoa content is in this, but 2oz of dark chocolate would only be enough to cause mild signs of toxicity, which would be hyper-excitability. It's likely that this will not cause any issues at all with Henry, so I don't see the need to rush to the vet just yet. Signs of further chocolate toxicity can be vomiting, tremors and seizures. If you notice any of these signs, then it's best to take Henry to a vet for treatment/monitoring. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done at home for this. It's best to make sure he has plenty of water and that you check him every four hours for any signs of toxicity. This is very concerning and how much it will affect Louis will depend on how much was ingested (it comes in packs of different sizes) and how much he weighs. However, it is always best to be cautious as chocolate toxicity is a potentially serious toxicity which can lead to severe complications and even death. Again this will depend on the amount ingested relative to the patient's size. Some of the common complications include gastrointestinal signs, arrhythmia and seizures. If he just ate, a veterinarian may still be able to induce vomiting to at least retrieve some.
