Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is very concerning and how much it will affect Louis will depend on how much was ingested (it comes in packs of different sizes) and how much he weighs. However, it is always best to be cautious as chocolate toxicity is a potentially serious toxicity which can lead to severe complications and even death. Again this will depend on the amount ingested relative to the patient's size. Some of the common complications include gastrointestinal signs, arrhythmia and seizures. If he just ate, a veterinarian may still be able to induce vomiting to at least retrieve some. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your local emergency clinic as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Good luck!

You are correct that chocolate can be toxic in dogs. However, a chocolate biscuit will have very little actual chocolate in it. I am attaching a handout on chocolate toxicity below.

If Oscar only ate a small part of a biscuit, I would not expect him to have any problems, but dogs can certainly develop some GI upset from eating something abnormal, so I would recommend contacting your veterinarian if he develops any vomiting or diarrhea.

Unless he ate a large quantity of Cocoa Puffs, the worst you may see is some stomach upset (vomiting or diarrhea).
Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. Minor stomach upset can usually be managed with a 24 fast followed by a bland diet fed in small,frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. If not, see your veterinarian for an exam.

Monitor him closely for vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness and hyperactivity and have him examined by a vet if you notice anything abnormal. Since it was milk chocolate with caramel, the toxicity is lower. You can use this toxicity meter to gauge the level of toxicity.

Chocolate toxicity causes vomiting, diarrhea, tachycardia (high heart rate), arrythmias (Abnormal heart beat rhythm), tremors, seizures and death, often in that order, depending on how much was eaten. My pug ate a chocolate crumb. Is baker's chocolate poisonous to dogs?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is concerning as it appears that Tika is a small dog. However, how likely she is to develop a severe reaction depends on the exact amount of chocolate ingested which varies per package. The amount of chocolate would be in the bag and that information would be quite helpful in order to know how serious this can be. Having said that, it would be indicated to have Tika evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible to check the amount of chocolate ingested but also to check Tika for manifestations of chocolate toxicity and treat accordingly. Chocolate toxicity can result in gastrointestinal signs, heart issues and even neurological signs such as seizures. If this just happened, a veterinarian would be able to possibly induce vomiting to try to retrieve some of the chocolate. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Louie! One Hershey kiss weighs about 4.46 grams so 20 is about 89.2 grams of milk chocolate. For Louie that is a toxic dose where vomiting and diarrhea will occur. Since he is vomiting he should be seen by your Vet for an exam, anti-nausea medications and fluids today. If he is having diarrhea they can provide medications to help with that. Once the vomiting stops he should be fed a bland diet for 3-7 days. You can purchase a diet from your Vet or cook for him by boiling chicken or hamburger and combining it with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. I wish Louie the best!

If you still have the ice cream container, check the label for chocolate or cocoa content. This is needed to calculate how much chocolate or cocoa your dog ingested. The toxicity depends on how much chocolate Napolean actually ate. Figure out how much chocolate Napolean actually ate. I would recommend to call the Pet Poison Control hotline: 855-764-7661. They can calculate the amount that Napoleon ate and accurately tell you if it is toxic or not. Milk chocolate is generally less toxic which is what it sounds like Napoelon got into. According to the VCA website: Toxic doses of theobromine are reported to be as low as 20 mg/kg, where agitation, hyperactivity and gastrointestinal signs (such as drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea - all which may smell like chocolate) can be seen. Now its just figuring out how much chocolate Napoleon ate. I hope this helps!

My 70lb dog ate Reese's. Is chocolate toxic or is fat the issue?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Prince. Oh no, that's not good! As I'm sure you know, Reese's contain chocolate and chocolate is toxic to dogs. At 70lbs of body weight, he can eat about 30 average size peanut butter cups without suffering chocolate intoxication; however he may get gastro-intestinal problems such as diarrhea and pancreatitis. Fatty foods can give dogs pancreatitis, which can be life threatening. The best thing to do is take him into the vet to have vomiting induced to get rid of the peanut cups. If you chose not to do this, you need to watch him for vomiting, diarrhea, vomiting undigested food, lethargy, a loss of appetite, and vomiting water. If you see any of those signs, it's an emergency and he will have to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!
