My dog ate chocolate bark. Do I need to take him to the vet now?

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 11 months and 2 days old | 65 lbs

Hi, Henry (50 lbs) just ate about 2 oz of chocolate bark--half dark, half white. Do I take him to the vet?

It's difficult to know how much the actual cocoa content is in this, but 2oz of dark chocolate would only be enough to cause mild signs of toxicity, which would be hyper-excitability. It's likely that this will not cause any issues at all with Henry, so I don't see the need to rush to the vet just yet.

Signs of further chocolate toxicity can be vomiting, tremors and seizures. If you notice any of these signs, then it's best to take Henry to a vet for treatment/monitoring. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done at home for this. It's best to make sure he has plenty of water and that you check him every four hours for any signs of toxicity. If he is still normal after 12 hours, then I would not worry about any signs of toxicity.

Oh no, that's not good! Dark chocolate is the most toxic type of chocolate, and given that I don't know your dog's weight or how much he ate, it's best that he is seen by a vet immediately. The vet can do decontamination procedures to prevent chocolate toxicity from occurring, and can treat any symptoms he may already be showing.

For a dog Vinny's size, 3oz of dark chocolate is enough to cause tremors and seizures. This is a medical emergency and he has to see a vet now to get treated for chocolate toxicity. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.

Oh no, that's not good! At Posey's weight and with the amount of dark chocolate she ate, you can see a mild to moderate toxic reaction. It would be best if she was taking into the emergency vet for decontamination procedures to prevent this from happening. Good luck, I hope she is ok!

My dog ate dark chocolate. What do I do if I'm far from a vet?

Hello and welcome to PetCoach. Depending on the amount of chocolate (number of grams) as well as the weight of Caramel. For example, 10gm of dark sweet chocolate will be fine, where 30gm will produce mild signs (vomiting and diarrhea) and 50gm will cause severe signs (tremors, seizures, possible death). This is depending on the % of cocoa in the chocolate. If it is dark baking chocolate as little as 12gm can cause severe signs. You can use the link http://www.mosmanvet.com.au/Services/ChocolateToxicityCalculator/tabid/28761/Default.aspx to approximate the level of toxicity. Making your dog vomit with salt is itself very dangerous, as if the salt doesn't result in vomiting then you can end up giving your dog salt toxicity, which is very serious. Please don't give any more salt. If you can get her to a vet to induce vomiting this is best, otherwise all you can do is wait and see. If she starts having vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, tremors or seizures then you are seeing signs of chocolate toxicity and need to see a vet ASAP. Best of luck with your little Caramel.

Rosie is already showing signs of a mild reaction, which is hyperactivity. Further signs of toxicity can be vomiting, tremors and seizures. If you notice any of these signs, then it's best to take Rosie to a vet for treatment/monitoring, because chocolate toxicity can be deadly. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done at home for this. It's best to make sure she has plenty of water and that you check her every two hours for any further signs of toxicity. If you notice any of these signs, then it's best to take Toby to a vet for treatment/monitoring, because chocolate toxicity can be deadly. Nicotine toxicity will have similar signs and again it's best to take him to a vet if there is any concern. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done at home for this. For a 60 lb dog, Olive would need to eat More than 10oz of pure dark chocolate for there to be severe effects. That would be more than 6 servings of this product or about half the bag. Moderate side effects will be seen at 7 or more oz of dark chocolate. Olive will most likely experience some stomache upset mostly because of the mango. However, if she has vomiting or diarrhea that persists for more than 24 hours or if she becomes inappetent or lethargic, she will need to be seen by a veterinarian right away.

My dog ate brownie mix. What are the signs and what should I do?

If this was a milk chocolate mix then he should only end up with mild to moderate symptoms: - GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite) - Increase thirst and urination - Tachycardia (fast heart rate) and hyperexcitability, high blood pressure - Neurological signs If this was dark chocolate, bakers chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, then he ate a toxic dose and should go to the ER as soon as possible! I suggest you do the following if decide not to go to the ER now: 1. If he will eat it, give him one or two slices of plain bread now. Sometimes that helps with the diarrhea and will slow down the GI tract. 2. Then, no food for 6-8 hours. Water should be available at all times. 3. If no vomiting after 6-8 hours, then start feeding small amounts of a bland diet every few hours. Bland foods like: scrambled eggs, plain rice, plain pasta, boiled chicken or turkey, human baby foods (meat flavors). No butter, oil or spices on the food. 4. If vomiting starts at any time or he becomes VERY restless then you should get him to the ER for an exam as soon as possible. I hope this is helpful! Best wishes.

My dog ate chocolate. Is it an emergency? When should I call the vet?

In order to know if Barney is in any danger we need know how much chocolate he ate, what kind (dark, milk, bakers?), and how long ago. Based on his picture, Barney is a very small dog, so if he ate more than 1.5oz of milk chocolate (and any amount of a darker chocolate) he needs to go to the vet to vomit. Give them your regular vet a call right away and see if he can go straight there or if they recommend he go to an emergency clinic. Good luck!
