My dog ate chapstick. He seems fine, but should I take him to the vet?

If your dog did not eat the actual tube and only the content, there should be no problem as non of these ingredients is toxic. However, there is a possibility that Max may get diarrhea. If that happens, you can do the following: Take your dog off food for about 12 hrs, then feed bland food such as boiled rice with boiled white chicken meat in small quantities over several feeds a day. Do this for a day, then start replacing small quantities of rice with his normal food over the next two days until he is at the normal quantity of his regular food. If the diarrhea does not go away by the end of the third day, or your dog is lethargic and dehydrated,you will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for an exam.

It depends on the ingredients of the chapstick. Regular or medicated chapstick is even more likely to contain difficult-to-pronounce, ingredients that could be toxic or harmful to Skye. Cheater is a naughty guy! But, luckily he should be ok. I would expect to possibly see diarrhea, given all the oils in this lip balm. You should watch for that. Vomiting would be rare, but possible, given the castor oil.

Normally, there are no ingredients in lipstick that we would expect to cause toxicity issues in dogs - so chances are good that Khloe will not have any serious problems related to this. She may have some mild GI upset due to eating something unfamiliar like this, which could have caused her to vomit this morning. If she is acting normal otherwise and does not have any further vomiting, it should be okay to monitor her at home for the next day or two. If she continues to vomit today, or if she develops any other symptoms such as acting lethargic or not wanting to eat, it would be best to take her to the vet to find out what's wrong.

Chapstick is mostly made of Vaseline which won’t hurt him. I’m sure he’s just being an active puppy. This is like having a toddler and you should puppy proof your home. He will get better once he’s older. In the meantime give him plenty of exercise so he’s very tired, and lots of toys that are safe for him. If she chewed it to bits, it should pass without any problems. If she swallowed it whole, there is a slim chance it could cause a gastric or intestinal obstruction. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or straining to defecate. See your veterinarian if necessary. You can mix in some cooked brown rice or add a couple tablespoons of plain, canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling) to the meals to help cushion it and push it through.
