My Yorkie ate a calcium D3 supplement. Is 800IU D3 safe for him?

my 9lb yorkie have have ingested a calcium d3 supplement. I just need to know what to do for him. It was 600mg calcium 800IU d3

Hi and thanks for your post.

Vitamin D3 is the more concerning item over the calcium. Vitamin D3 ingestion would cause a problem at 0.5-3mg/kg of body weight.

He is 4kg and 800 IU is 0.02mg therefore 0.02/4kg=0.005mg/kg dosage which is below the 0.5mg/kg cut off and is likely not enough to cause a problem.

I would watch him today and tomorrow and take him into your veterinarian if any signs of illness are noted: lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, drinking a lot of water, not urinating or urinating more frequently.

However if you are still concerned and it has been less than 2 hours since ingestion, you may take her into an emergency veterinarian to induce emissions (vomiting) and have her assessed.

This is not a toxic dose for a 15 pound dog. That being said, it could still upset his stomach. He could show signs anytime in the next 48 hours. If he starts to seem sick you should take him to your vet ASAP. I suggest you feed him 1/2 a piece of bread that will help coat the tablet and pull it through his GI tract. No other food for 6 hours. The dose of D3 ingested, 0.0125mg, will likely not pose a risk of serious toxicity. The dose of calcium is within published therapeutic ranges and should not cause a toxicity either. You can monitor for lethargy, increased thirst or urination and GI upset at home. Symptoms typically occur between 12 and 36 hours after ingestion. See your veterinarian if necessary.

My 70lb dog ate Vitamin D gummies. Should I worry about 2000 IU?

The amount of Vitamin D ingested will likely not put a dog of her weight at risk of serious toxicity. Make sure the gummies do not contain xylitol. That would be more dangerous than the Vitamin D. If they contain xylitol,seek veterinary attention immediately. Xylitol is toxic to dogs. It may cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar levels. If the gummies do not have xylitol, the worst you may see is some minor stomach upset.

Hello. The general rule I apply to possible Vit. D intoxication is a pet can safely handle up to 10000 IU per kg of body weight. That means your 6 pound dog is safe up to 27,000 IU ( which I do not recommend giving ). So you have nothing to worry about at this time. My dog ate a vitamin D pill. Is 2000 IU toxic for a small dog?

Scooter has consumed 0.05mg. Symptoms of Vitamin D toxicosis can be seen with doses as low as 0.1mg/kg, and a lethal dose in a mature dog can be as low as 2mg/kg. He is 7.72kg, so he has consumed 0.0065mg/kg. As you can see, that is under the dose needed for toxicity. Just make sure he does not eat any more! I hope this helps!

My dog ate Vitamin D capsules. Should I be worried about toxicity?

I would recommend making the dog vomit. You can try hydrogen peroxide at home or take him to a vet for them to induce vomiting. Usually dogs will vomit if they ingested the pills in the last hour or two. Fultium is a vit D supplement. My concerns is that it might decrease the Calcium released by the body and interfere with the hyperparathyroid gland. If you cannot get her to vomit I would recommend taking her to a vet. It is very important to monitor her for eating,drinking, defecating and seizure activity. IF at any time she is acting abnormal or not herself I would highly recommend taking her to a vet.
