My 20lb dog ate a 5000 IU vitamin D3 tablet. Will he be okay?

Hello, this morning my 20lb dog digested a vitamin d3, 5000iu tablet. Should I be concerned I tried to make him throw it up and he wouldn't. Im very concerned, he seems okay.

Hi there! As long as Buddy only ate one tablet, this dose would not be expected to cause any problems.

The toxic dose of vitamin D3 in dogs is 100 mcg/kg or above. 5000 IU = 125 mcg, and Buddy weighs about 9 kg, which means he got a total dose of about 14 mcg/kg. This is well below the reported toxic dose, so it's very unlikely that this will be an issue :)

I would STRONGLY recommend calling ASPCA Poison Control (1-888-426-4435). I have seen a case of Vitamin D3 toxicity that did end in death (it was a higher dose but I do not know the exact toxic range). They will charge you a fee (I think $60) but they will be able to tell you whether to go to the emergency vet or not. They will also be available to consult with your vet as long as needed during treatment if needed.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. One vitamin d capsule will not cause any problems to your dog. There is no need to see emergency vet or make her vomit. Please, monitor her at home, there should not be any worrying signs related to the capsule ingestion.

Scooter has consumed 0.05mg. Symptoms of Vitamin D toxicosis can be seen with doses as low as 0.1mg/kg, and a lethal dose in a mature dog can be as low as 2mg/kg. He is 7.72kg, so he has consumed 0.0065mg/kg. As you can see, that is under the dose needed for toxicity. Just make sure he does not eat any more! I hope this helps!

The amount of Vitamin D ingested will likely not put a dog of her weight at risk of serious toxicity. Make sure the gummies do not contain xylitol. That would be more dangerous than the Vitamin D. If they contain xylitol,seek veterinary attention immediately. Xylitol is toxic to dogs. It may cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar levels. If the gummies do not have xylitol, the worst you may see is some minor stomach upset.

My puppy ate a calcium and vitamin D3 pill. What should I do?

This is not a toxic dose for a 15 pound dog. That being said, it could still upset his stomach. He could show signs anytime in the next 48 hours. If he starts to seem sick you should take him to your vet ASAP. I suggest you feed him 1/2 a piece of bread that will help coat the tablet and pull it through his GI tract. No other food for 6 hours. My 19lb dog ate a human prenatal vitamin with DHA. Is she okay?

Since she only ate 1 pill, I would not be worried about toxicity. The doses in the vitamins for each of the components should not be harmful. You may see some GI signs such as poor appetite, vomiting or diarrhea, but should resolve. If symptoms continue, I would recommend taking her to your veterinarian.

My Yorkie ate a calcium D3 supplement. Is 800IU D3 safe for him?

Hi and thanks for your post. Vitamin D3 is the more concerning item over the calcium. Vitamin D3 ingestion would cause a problem at 0.5-3mg/kg of body weight. He is 4kg and 800 IU is 0.02mg therefore 0.02/4kg=0.005mg/kg dosage which is below the 0.5mg/kg cut off and is likely not enough to cause a problem. I would watch him today and tomorrow and take him into your veterinarian if any signs of illness are noted: lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, drinking a lot of water, not urinating or urinating more frequently. However if you are still concerned and it has been less than 2 hours since ingestion, you may take her into an emergency veterinarian to induce emissions (vomiting) and have her assessed. My dog took fish oil with vitamin D. Is 1000 IU safe for a 110 lb dog?

The amount that he ingested is not considered toxic. Calculated, he ingested approximately 0.025mg of vitamin D and toxic doses for this size of a dog would potentially start at 5mg. He will be absolutely fine! I would recommend fish oil products such as welactin or Krillex krill oil treats.
