My cat ate a Calcium & D3 supplement. Is 500 IU toxic? What to do?

Hi there! As long as Buddy only ate one tablet, this dose would not be expected to cause any problems. The toxic dose of vitamin D3 in dogs is 100 mcg/kg or above. 5000 IU = 125 mcg, and Buddy weighs about 9 kg, which means he got a total dose of about 14 mcg/kg. This is well below the reported toxic dose, so it's very unlikely that this will be an issue :)

She needs to be seen by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER immediately. Either can induce vomiting via injection to get the pills up and out. Activated charcoal may be given afterwards to further decrease absorption. This is most successful if done within 2 hours of ingestion. Given current events, you may need to drop her off then wait for your veterinarian to call you to discuss exam findings, treatment options and follow up plans.

Hi and thanks for your post. Vitamin D3 is the more concerning item over the calcium. Vitamin D3 ingestion would cause a problem at 0.5-3mg/kg of body weight. He is 4kg and 800 IU is 0.02mg therefore 0.02/4kg=0.005mg/kg dosage which is below the 0.5mg/kg cut off and is likely not enough to cause a problem. I would watch him today and tomorrow and take him into your veterinarian if any signs of illness are noted: lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, drinking a lot of water, not urinating or urinating more frequently. However if you are still concerned and it has been less than 2 hours since ingestion, you may take her into an emergency veterinarian to induce emissions (vomiting) and have her assessed. This is not a toxic dose for a 15 pound dog. That being said, it could still upset his stomach. He could show signs anytime in the next 48 hours. If he starts to seem sick you should take him to your vet ASAP. I suggest you feed him 1/2 a piece of bread that will help coat the tablet and pull it through his GI tract. No other food for 6 hours. Scooter has consumed 0.05mg. Symptoms of Vitamin D toxicosis can be seen with doses as low as 0.1mg/kg, and a lethal dose in a mature dog can be as low as 2mg/kg. He is 7.72kg, so he has consumed 0.0065mg/kg. As you can see, that is under the dose needed for toxicity. Just make sure he does not eat any more! I hope this helps!
