Asthmatic dog sick after snow, lethargic, breathing hard. What to do?

Poor Potato! He needs to be examined by a vet right away if he is having a hard time breathing. He could have a problem with his asthma, infection, or fluid in/around his lungs. Your vet can take an x-ray to evaluate his lungs and then determine the best way to treat. He may just need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, bronchodilator, or other medications depending on the cause. Call your vet and have him examined as soon as possible.

Poor pup! It sounds like he has a severe respiratory infection, and I would take him into the vet right away. It's quite serious that he is struggling to breath, and he could go into respiratory distress if he can't breath well. He may need a decongestant to help him breath better, which can be prescribed by a vet. Please take him into one now.

This can be a number of respiratory issues including laryngeal paralysis, laryngeal obstruction, or just a benign condition called reverse sneezing, where it appears he is struggling to breathe but it is actually a tickling of the larynx and completely harmless. I would recommend recording the next episode on your phone and then showing the video to your vet for advise on what to do. The diarrhea and vomiting has likely contributed to dehydration and subsequent lethargy, and this needs to be corrected as soon as possible at the vet, as he will most certainly continue to worsen otherwise. Possible causes include toxin ingestion, foreign body ingestion, gastroenteritis, or pancreatitis. The vet can perform tests to determine the cause of his illness, such as blood work, x-rays or ultrasound, while they continue to stabilize him. I hope this helps, and that Star feels better soon!

I am so sorry Austyn is feeling so badly tonight. The safest thing to do given the severity of his signs would be to bring him to an emergency vet for evaluation. Vomiting can be caused by many things (dietary indiscretion/eating something he shouldn’t for example) and often isn’t too serious. However, given that Austyn is pacing, short of breath, and uncomfortable I worry something more serious could be going on. For example a condition called gastric dilatation and volvulus can be seen especially in large breed dogs where their stomach bloats. Or dogs can aspirate a little on the vomit which can lead to respiratory problems. If he doesn’t settle down over next the 15 minutes, or if his belly is bloated and firm, or the vomiting continues it is important to bring him right away. If his belly is soft and he settles down and he is breathing normally and his gums are pink, you could watch him closely and bring him to his vet tomorrow for evaluation. I hope austyn starts feeling better very soon.

The safest bet would be to take Graham to the vet or to a veterinary ER as any respiratory issues are especially concerning in brachycephalic breeds (including pug mixes) that have compromised airways due to their anatomy. Smoke inhalation can be very serious in dogs (as well as all animals and humans), resulting in inflammation of their airways. Many chemicals in smoke can also cause airways damage. Your vet/ER vet may recommend keeping him in an oxygen cage and administering steroids and/or bronchdiators until he is breathing normally again. I would definitely keep him inside until you are able to bring him to the vet. Good luck!

There are a variety of causes for what you are describing, including an upper respiratory infection, tracheal irritation, asthma, allergies, or another underlying issue. As they are persistent and non-resolving, I would recommend Cooper be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to try to determine what may be going on, have any necessary testing done (xrays, etc) and start a treatment plan if needed.
