Dog has allergy symptoms: labored breathing, runny nose. What to do?

A swollen face, swollen lips, red eyes, severe itching or difficulty breathing may all be symptoms of a vaccine reaction. An antihistamine, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), can be given but only under the advice of your veterinary. Legally, we are prohibited from recommending you medicate her in the absence of a physical exam and a VPCR (veterinarian-patient-client relationship). If her symptoms persist or worsen, have her examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER.

The most likely causes are an infection or allergies. An object stuck in the nose is possible but typically tends to be one sided and will start to have greenish discharge. This is likely just from stress and allergies but could the beginning stages of an upper respiratory infection. I would start with some benadryl twice a day. See link below. If he isn't improving or gets worse, I would have your vet take a look at him to make sure he doesn't need any antibiotics. Keep a close eye on him since he is so young and small. Draco will need to see a vet for his allergies. He likely needs medication to treat the symptoms, which can only be prescribed by a vet. It's concerning that he is having trouble breathing, and if it appears he's really struggling to breathe, he needs to see a vet immediately. When a puppy struggles to breathe, it can lead to respiratory distress which is fatal without treatment. Should he still be able to breathe ok, you can try using a humidifier or bringing him into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms. Allergies in dogs typically present as skin irritation with itching, but some dogs also have intestinal inflammation as a result of food allergies, or respiratory changes, but the respiratory changes/sneezing are less common. If Bear has only been sneezing with clear nasal discharge, and his skin looks normal and he has not been itching, I would think allergies are less likely. Most dogs sneeze as a result of nasal irritation, infection, foreign bodies, etc. If Bear's nasal discharge is yellow or green, or he has not been eating, drinking or acting normally, he needs to be seen by his vet. Otherwise, monitor his sneezing for changes and take him to his vet if it gets worse.

IT could be an allergic reaction or an infection. you can try giving him a benadryl and see if it has any effect on him, if it doesn't you will need to take him to the vet in order for him to get an anti allergy injection and possibly some antibiotics as well.

I am sorry to hear about Bob. I would definitely recommend getting him to the vet as soon as possible. If he is having difficulty breathing tonight I would take him to an emergency vet. There are many possible causes of coughing. Allergies can occasionally cause a mild cough but we don't often see coughing as a result of allergies in pets (in pets allergies tend to manifest more as skin problems or sneezing) and in those cases the cough is more mild. We would worry about infections with bacteria or virus (including pneumonia in severe coughing), heartworm disease, heart disease, and lung tumors to name a few. Bob needs to have the vet examine him, listen to his heart and lungs, and most likely take x-rays of his lungs to check for changes to the heart and lungs.
