Dog licking raw nose/mouth after being outside. Is it allergies?

So, there are a number of things this could be. 1) This could be an allergic response to something in her environment or an insect, 2) This could be a fungal or bacterial infection that could be primary OR secondary to trauma or an allergy. Ideally I would do a prep on a slide and look under the microscope to see if there is a significant bacterial or yeast population. Regardless, however, I think she would benefit from some topical treatment depending on what is seen under the microscope. If it seems to be spreading, and the area is swollen, some injectable or oral medications may be indicated.

Poor baby. Definitely looks red and irritated. It may need oral antibiotics or possibly just some topical antibiotics. I would call and schedule an exam and get the correct medications. The cause could be infection, allergies, immune mediated conditions, and more. Needs to be looked at a little more closely.

It sounds like Ruffo may be experiencing an allergic reaction. This could be due to something in the environment, foods, bee stings, etc, especially if it is causing facial swelling or puffiness. I would definitely schedule a visit with your vet to figure out the underlying cause and get him started on some meds such as an antihistamines to help with the swelling and itchiness. If the swelling worsens on his nose, or appears on his face, head, or neck, seeking care sooner is best as this is considered a serious condition.

Poor Baxter. It sounds like he is suffering from an allergy or a skin infection. You can try to give Benadryl twice a day for the itchiness but I would contact your vet for an accurate dose dependent on your dogs weight and age. I would also put a cone collar on him to prevent the licking. If he doesn't stop licking it will not improve. Finally, since it is so raw, I would have your vet take a look at it to see if he needs some oral antibiotics and stronger allergy meds to help him heal faster. I hope this helps!

Pawing at the nose could be allergies but it could be that he has something going on inside his mouth. Since he has some eye discharge too I'd say allergies are high on the list. Could just be seasonal allergies and will go away on their own. You can try giving him some Benadryl for a few days to see if the symptoms get better. The dose is 1mg/# of body weight so a 50# dog would get 50mg (2 of the 25mg human capsules). You can give it twice a day. If you do this consistently and there is no change in 4-5 days then you can just stop - that means it's not working. If you notice it's helping you can continue giving it but just be aware that if you give it constantly they often build up a tolerance and then you'll notice it stops working. The only option left at home to add is an over the counter antihistamine such as Benadryl to help with redness and itching if it is from an allergy. you may need to change her bowls or bedding to see if it is a contact allergy that is getting worse. If this does not help you will have to see your vet for prescription medications
