My puppy has a runny nose and cough after daycare. Allergies or virus?

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | spayed | 9 months and 5 days old | 40 lbs

Hi! My 9 month old pup has had a runny nose along with occasional coughing and a what seems like a nose clearing thing. She will continually exhale out of her nose with some force for a few seconds. She is still active and will eat. This has been happening since i took her to day care about 2 weeks ago. Allergies? Virus picked up at the day care? Something stuck in her nose? Thanks!

The most likely causes are an infection or allergies. An object stuck in the nose is possible but typically tends to be one sided and will start to have greenish discharge. If she starts to get worse or doesn’t get better, have her examined by her veterinarian. Hope she continues improving. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

These are signs of an upper respiratory infection, it's very common in dogs kept together with other dogs in a small area. i would recommend taking her to your vet ASAP in order to get it checked as she will probably need a course of antibiotics in order to get better.

This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection or possibly to a rhinitis (inflammatory, allergic, infective). The presence of green discharge from the nose is particularly concerning. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.

Poor Daisy. If the discharge is just clear and not yellow or green, then this is likely a sign of allergic rhinitis. Something in the environment is causing her to have an allergic inflammatory response in her nasal passages. However, as long as the discharge remains clear she may get over this on her own over the next few weeks. Monitor her daily for any changes and have her seen by your veterinarian if things get worse (sneezing, infection type discharge, decreased appetite, etc). But hopefully she won't need to be seen and she improves on her own.

Allergies are not common in a puppy but they can occur. More common would be an infection. I recommend to have him examined by a veterinarian. New pets should generally have an exam soon after they are adopted to test for worms which could spread to humans and have an over all health assessment. I hope this helps.

Poor Julian! Dogs can get respiratory illnesses and allergies, both of which can cause sneezing, coughing, and discharge like you've seen. In the case of infections, the discharge may become cloudy or yellow/green, whereas allergies tend to stay clear. In either case, since this has been ongoing a few days, it's a good idea to bring Julian into your vet. They can provide allergy medications or other treatments as needed depending on the cause. If you notice him worsening, the discharge changing color, fever, or changes in behavior or appetite, that's a sign that he needs to be seen sooner. Until then, keeping his eyes and nose clear with a clean washcloth can help keep him comfortable and prevent any debris from getting stuck and crusting his nostrils or eyes shut. Keeping him eating and drinking and in an area free of dust and dander can also help.

My 4-month-old puppy has a runny nose and cough. Should I see a vet?

This is suspicious of kennel cough, which is an infection of the upper respiratory system. Kennel cough is most suspicious if Lexie has been in contact with other dogs in the past month or so. If Lexie has not had contact with other dogs, then the cough is likely due to something else. They can develop a cough and runny nose with conditions like distemper, allergies, heart worm, heart disease and lung worm. For this reason, it's best to have Lexie checked out by a veterinarian. They will be able to determine the cause of this and prescribe the appropriate treatment. It's definitely doesn't appear to be an emergency though, so you are safe to wait a day or two to see if it gets better (can happen with some viral diseases). My puppy has a cough, sneeze, and runny nose after travel. Allergies?

This is likely just from stress and allergies but could the beginning stages of an upper respiratory infection. I would start with some benadryl twice a day. See link below. If he isn't improving or gets worse, I would have your vet take a look at him to make sure he doesn't need any antibiotics. Keep a close eye on him since he is so young and small. Make sure he is eating and drinking and acting normal. I hope this helps!

Puppy sneezing & snorting after park. Is it kennel cough? What to do?

Your puppy may have pickd up a respiratory virus or bacteria in the park. This could be the beginning of kennel cough, even though she is not coughing yet. Observer closely, and should the discharge get cloudy or yellowish or if she gets a seriously bad cough, take her in to your vet for an exam. Kennel cough is usually self limiting, and does not need medications unless there is a fever or a seriously debilitating cough. She will also need to be seen by a vet if she gets lethargic, stops eating or drinking or appears obviously ill.
