My dog ate something he's allergic to. How long should I worry?

Yes it can possibly be due to the oil. If feces do not normalize in 48hours I would recommend to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Allergic reactions typically present signs within 15-30 minutes. Since an hour has passed with no indication of a reaction, that is a very good sign. I would say that if by the completion of the second hour, your pup is still normal, you are likely safe. It is great that you are taking such good care of her. Frenchies are the cutest!!

I certainly think it still could be from the reaction - it may be a little painful when her eye cream is put in or it may simply bother her, so this might be why she showed her teeth. If her eye is still swollen at the 24 hour mark you should ask about a recheck since usually an allergic reaction has resolved by then.

He may need longer treatment with steroids. You can continue to give the Benadryl every 8 hours but if there is no change, I would see a vet. Good luck and kisses to Shorty!

Usually, when we see a drug reaction, it occurs within 30 minutes of administration, especially with injectables. This was most likely a delayed type hypersensitivity reaction & not associated with the food consumed. I hope you have conveyed this information to the veterinarian who gave the medications. I would also inform Brew's regular veterinarian of the reaction & make sure a note is placed in the record that one of the medications, or the combination, can cause a significant allergic reaction in Brew. But I do not think the food contributed to the problem. If he is not feeling/doing better very soon, please have him examined. There are other medications that will mitigate the allergic reaction. Hopefully, Brew will be doing great very soon. Take care.

Poor guy. Steroids can cause abnormal stools, so this is likely the culprit. Also his body is stressed, so loose stool is commonly seen. You can try giving him a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days, then slowly transition him back to his normal diet once his stools do return to normal. 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) can also be added to his food daily to help solidify his stools. If he still has loose stools after 48 hrs, then a repeat vet visit is likely needed to get him on something stronger. You should continue to give the Benadryl as instructed by your vet. I would make sure though that his water intake is appropriate as dry feces can sometimes be a sign of decreased water intake. Good luck and have a great day!
