Why is my dog gassy and has diarrhea after allergy steroids?

Poor pup! I recommend to have him examined again today. It’s possible the liquid Benadryl is making him throw up. The doctor may recommend to try a tablet instead. The doctor may also want to send him home with some oral steroids and perhaps a medication to stop vomiting. A bland diet for the next 24 hours may also be beneficial. I hope Kai starts feeling better quickly!

I would stop all the medicine and let her stomach rest. Steriods can cause GI upset andnit can be worse if they don’t have food in their system. Vomiting and diarrhea can be a side effect of the medicine. I would only feed chicken and rice to let her tummy rest for the next 24 hours

It certainly could be something simple such as an upset tummy so I would try not to over think anything just yet. Try starving him for 24 hours and feeding chicken and rice. With his recent history if you feel that he is dehydrated or going downhill go to the vet sooner rather than later. Hopefully it is a touch of gastroenteritis completely unrelated to his recent illness, but here is some information for you regarding the adrenal gland. The adrenal gland makes natural steroids, when we give steroid medicine this can suppress the adrenal gland releasing natural steroids. It takes a while for this suppression to happen, but it is certainly possible with prolonged use of higher dose steroids. The dog is okay until the steroid medication stops, then it has a steroid deficiency which leads to fatigue, sickness amongst many signs. The adrenal gland isn't damaged in this case, just suppressed. Nevertheless it can make a dog very ill, it is known as secondary adrenal insufficiency. Usually this is avoided by slowly tapering a dog off steroid medication so the gland starts functioning properly again. This is certainly something to bear in mind, but I would be more inclined to go down the route of gastroenteritis first. Don't hesitate to go to the vet with Bodie if the vomiting is not settling down. If you feel there is little improvement you can certainly mention adrenal insufficiency. Best of luck!

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Chyna's care. Loose stools is not a typical sign of an allergic reaction though anything is possible when that occurs. Also, it could have been secondary to the Benadryl though not typical or just dietary indiscretion from eating something else. Just continue to keep an eye on her for now. I am sorry to hear about your pup! I would recommend calling your vet to find out if the symptoms he is showing could be related to the injections. You don't mention what injections were given, but some (such as Cytopoint) can have transient vomiting/diarrhea/lethargy as a result which usually resolves in a few days but your vet may want to investigate further or prescribe medication to treat these symptoms.

That sounds like a very difficult situation. If the steroids are not helping Abby within about 72 hours, I would call your veterinarian to let me know, so they can decide what to do next based on the results they have so far. It sounds like your next option would be to do intestinal biopsies to try to figure out exactly what is going on in Abby's gut. Other options would be a consultation with a veterinary internal medicine specialist if one is available in your area.

The dexamethasone should not make Kai vomit. I recommend to have him examined as the vomiting could be related to the initial allergic reaction. The bland diet should also help settle the tummy but it won’t stop a continuing allergic reaction. I hope this is helps.
